OK OK you all have been waiting long enough.
Now presenting; my newest acquisition in pursuit of learning.......
A COMPLETE(minus secondary mirror, dome and gas grain) AIM-9J GCU.
Looks like a normal teen’s room right? Think again. Coming up, we’ll show you what parents should be looking for so they can identify signs of electrical engineering. I was shocked at what I found in this room!!!
Got one of those "camlink" USB converters because I was curious about em, and WHOAH I was shocked. UVC output, 20ms delay and signal looks to be properly grabbing 1080P
@30
. Single chip solution under a small sink and costs under $20. What in the heck is this.
So you all remember back in 2020 when I had that thread on the cheap as chips $20 HDMI capture card that BLEW UP big time?
Well guess what? I'm back with another, this time it's next generation and better than before!

Okay people, weird nerdy question: how the hell did the supplier of this sugar force non-cubic crystallization of sugar? Consistently all are this rectangular but chamfered edge thingy. I'm stumped, growing up I could only crystallize cubes or random tesselation of cube
Last weekend I was doing missile stuff too lol.
Got to muck with a FIM-43 Redeye launcher and take ref images(model coming soon). To get more measurements I have to go to Sweden sadly :(
First A2A actual kill on a F22 (that we know of) and it's a damn balloon.
Whoever that pilot is better be getting it on that plane and a kill in his record
Check this out, the Yaw radar seeker movement is just incredible on the AIM-7. Look at those joints go!
I'm pretty sure this is gas driven torque balanced piston movement al la Sidewinder fin movement drivers.
I've set up a simulation of a Rotman lens to drive a phased array in Elmer. The matching of the ports is poor, causing lots of internal reflections, resulting in unwanted side lobes and poor channel separation. Nonetheless I think it still demonstrates the principle nicely 😊
Well that's it, after just shy of 7 years working at NASA Goddard, I have handed in my badge.
Taking a month off to rest and reset before starting in October as a Space Systems Engineer at a satellite company. It's been a damn good few years, and I'll miss everyone.
i didnt know there was a nuclear weapons fandom who are trying their damndest to reverse-engineer modern nuclear weapon designs based off unclassified / public-domain info
Ya know these dirt cheap 256*192 thermals are honestly damn impressive all things considered.
Lepton based 9hz units are really gonna have to watch out, this is eating their lunch.
My brand strength grew more today.
Had regularly scheduled dentist appt and brought along the linux bridge board. Casually asked if I could borrow the xray for a few shots......
Is....this what happens when you don't tell engineers not to put the biggest antenna possible that the airframe can still fly with?!? Look at the absolute size of the radome, if only they painted it red around christmas.
I can't explain why but these EB-707 Condors are hilarious
Holy crap, I just figured out those supermarket scanners with the lasers are derived from THE FREAKING AIM-9 SIDEWINDER!?!?
Found this out by finding cited patents and yeah, matches
@ntumanov_Xray
Oh hell yeah, this is EXACTLY what I was looking for when I tweeted out.
Tbf I may have misremembered childhood, unsure if sugar or salt I was crystallizing.
As a couple you should own a minimum of the following
2 oscilloscopes
1 VNA
5 Power supplies
3 3D printers
3 Soldering irons
3 Function generators
9 Computers
Way too many dev boards
More parts than you can shake an iron at
Preferably more
My hs guidance counselor: No I don't know how to make a kalman filter work nor where the missile is at all times, why are you even asking me this?
Me: it's right in your name though?
Alright, time for a crash course in Signals Intelligence.
Multiple agencies run ISR birds on a variety of platforms, from high wing cessnas to business jet airframes. These do Imaging Surveillance and Reconnaisance and hold on station usually doing large circles 1/?
What the hell is MSFT smoking?
How do I get the stripped down government edition .iso to start winblows install from?
Christ, just stop with all the AI crap.
Satya Nadella says Windows PCs will have a photographic memory feature called Recall that will remember and understand everything you do on your computer by taking constant screenshots
Update: I may be misremembering what table crystal I was recrystallizing as a kid, salt (cubic crystal natural state) instead of sugar.
Also I got some great discussions kicked off in the comments, truly one of the best parts of this website
What the heck kinda control system they running in there? That's PINNED to a point, I'm betting some sort of optical flow based on eyes being locked down and forward while stationkeeping active?
Store separation is HARD, boundary conditions are kind of a pain and this is why modern rails have energetics squibs to kick the weapon clear via piston punch out of the boundary zone and into the laminar flow of air.
On this day 95 years ago, Robert H. Goddard launched the world's first successful liquid-propellant rocket. The rocket went up to an altitude of 41 feet in 2.5 seconds and landed 184 feet away.
#IdeasThatDefy
My acquisition included Chaff and Flare dispensers, a RWR antenna, countermeasures controller and.....
Drumroll.... An AIM-7 missile WGU (this thing HEVY)
Aight, guess I'll write about that whole
@MarkRober
class mess.
Honestly $249 for dubious at best "how to be an engineer" is not a winning move when you can learn the real craft for free or a kite string budget on your own and spin up a basic lab for that cost. 1/?
@Quemini
@War_Kittens
Wait..... Aren't they supposed to glow when you put them together or is that only after you yoink some dude's heart before lowering him into lava?
Now that I'm home, I'll tell you what I've been up to.
Spent the last week in Ukraine doing stuff 👀👍
For now tho, gonna get sleepy and resynch to EST.
Back to the normal day job tomorrow
Ok okay been trolling you lot long enough, meet the girlfriend who gave me that AIM-9X ornament, also an agency crew, but at a different center (yes I know the joke, and it makes it funnier).
WHOAH, within 30 mins of the newest supposed shootdown video the Arms Control Wonk slack has already got a geolocation of it and is now working out the general area of the SAM launch. Seriously, if you are interested in high speed geolocation or OSINT, it's well worth it
Wasn't even charged for em! Both the dentist and the radiologist were not even surprised, said lol sure and we got to taking images. Great news is my BGA alignment was DEAD ON.
Home from the trip and my memes are here! Defense meme pack 2 (currently a small test batch) preview and bumper sticker size NFMUs along with a large restock of the classics.
@torybruno
tell me where to send you some United Lunch Alliance and I'll send em!
so asml makes 25 machines a year at like $300M each, every good fab is completely dependent on them, and you're telling me no one in the startup world is crazy enough to try to compete? this is one of the main ai supply chain bottlenecks
