50 years ago today, Viking 1 launched on an 11-month journey to Mars. Viking was the first U.S. mission to land a spacecraft safely on the surface of Mars and return images of the surface. The Viking Lander proof test article is on display in DC:

On this day in 2003, our restoration of the B-29 Enola Gay was officially completed, with the aircraft fully reassembled for the first time since 1960. Enola Gay went on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center when it opened a few months later.

Astronomer Asaph Hall discovered Phobos, the larger of Mars' two moons #OTD in 1877. The Red Planet is named for the Roman god of war (Mars) and its moons are named for the personification of fear (Phobos) and terror (Deimos).

On #TDIH in 1951, Col. Fred J. Ascani set a world speed record of 635.686 mph in a F-86E Sabre at the National Air Races. The flight earned him the Mackay Trophy, which recognizes the most meritorious flight of the year.

Like other pioneering aviators before them, the crew of Double Eagle II made history crossing the Atlantic. Double Eagle II completed the first balloon flight across the Atlantic #OTD in 1978, flying the 3,100-mile flight from the US to France in 137 hours and 6 minutes.
