These in-game experiences have hundreds of millions of visits already (and 3-10k active kids online at any time), so maybe the damage has already been done. But I get the feeling most adults aren’t checking what content their kids are playing.

I talked to a friend who works at Roblox today about this — his argument was “Well, we can’t control user action, we can only act on reports”.
Which is true.
But games (for children) with features that actively encourage NSFW behavior should NOT continue to be on the platform.

You can’t even ensure the players gaming with your kids are actually children.

There are three age-gated tiers for Roblox content: age 13+, age 9+, and “All Ages”, which is supposed to be appropriate for 5-8 year olds.

Lots of popular games (Adopt Me, Brookhaven, Royale High) were not allowed, since they are social experiences with a lot of roleplay/dialogue, & difficult to moderate. Horror games (Mimic, Piggy, Doors) were also blocked.

Roblox *manually* curates what content kids are allowed to play at each age tier.
Until recently, this meant there were only 2k-ish games allowed if you have parental restrictions on (new accounts and uncurated games are set to age 13+ by default).

In more than a few of these games, there’s an area that forces your character into a reclined position (by “slipping on water” or getting knocked by other players). And in some cases, you glitch/get stuck there.

Back to the bathroom games. Every one of the “all ages” games I played had some sort of creep factor, including trapping you in a stall with someone if they jumped in as you were closing the door. And they could then snap photos of you with this particular game’s selfie feature.

Look, I've been a forum mod *so many times*.
When you get a tip that one of your mods might be being inappropriate with minors - YOU SHUT THEM DOWN INSTANTLY. De-mod, freeze their account, and investigate.
That NOT happening is what tipped us off that something wasn't right.

It was freaking *bad*. Like, trauma territory. First thing we did is file a FBI report.

We finally got responses.
"We didn't see an issue with them being on the site. If we did, we would have acted".

So, we built a case & got the user de-modded over *entirely different CoC violations*.
Because we still believed there might be an investigation.
But, the mod still retained *multiple* forum accounts, was still listed as a mod & was still interacting with the minors onsite.

board of directors have closed the forums (read-only) for a REAL investigation, have received 150 pages of evidence from members & 50 pages from NaNo HQ.
No word yet about the Young Writer’s program. Mods banned at least one YWP kid who shared a testimony.

In December of 2022, the
#NaNoWriMo
winner page directly funneled users to two vanity presses that charged $10k+ in publishing fees. When users exposed this they were banned from the forums & an apology was posted to the vanity press sponsors. 2023 was supposed to restore trust.

Yeah, Roblox has been having moderation & content issues since its inception. The popularity it enjoyed due to covid is what prompted parental restriction modification, but they seem to be sliding backwards (I assume because locking kids out of popular experiences hurts profits)

forums have gone full-on nuclear.
Users are writing beautiful, heartfelt posts that are instantly locked, their accounts silenced.
In the mod chat, mods have been told to remove anything that criticizes HQ.
This is only one - there are so many more.
