This remarkably enhances the visibility of nerve branches that were previously undetectable under white-light imaging, having potential for reducing nerve damage and improving surgical outcome in head&neck, colorectal and other surgeries. @IntuitiveSurg 2/3

Preprint alert: we demonstrate intraoperative nerve visualization using a clinically approved contrast agent sodium fluorescein. This was observed in a standard DaVinci robotic surgery imaging system and in a clinical trial with an optimized custom setup.

Seeing nerves embedded in fatty tissue is a major challenge in surgery (left). With SWIR Raman imaging, we provide strong nerve contrast (right), revealing hidden structures. This enables novel applications in surgery, enhancing precision and outcomes. 6/7

SWIR Raman imaging can non-invasively monitor the progression of metabolic disorders, such as obesity (left) and fatty liver disease (right). Our simple optical system allows tracking these conditions in real-time, improving diagnosis, drug response and treatment plans. 4/7

SWIR Raman imaging offers superb label-free chemical contrast for longitudinal, non-invasive, whole-body mouse in vivo monitoring of tissue dynamics. 3/7

In the visible range, autofluorescence limits the chemical contrast of spontaneous Raman imaging. In the SWIR (950-1700 nm), Raman scattering overcomes autofluorescence at illumination wavelengths as short as 892 nm, allowing for macroscopic wide-field Raman imaging. 2/7
