What a difference a day makes. On Monday, we warned the EU about deepening its migration cooperation with Libya. By Tuesday eve, the EU delegation was denied entry to Eastern Libya, declared 'persona non grata' & ordered to leave. With 'friends' like these who needs enemies?

"The EU & its member states must urgently re-evaluate their support for Libyan authorities & militias, suspend any actions contributing to trapping refugees and migrants in the country, and avoid further complicity in perpetuating grave human rights violations," says @evegeddie.

Refugees & migrants in Libya are subjected to systematic & widespread violations by unaccountable armed groups & militias - conditions, which, according to the UN, are likely amount to crimes against humanity. Libya is not a safe place for disembarkation.

The EU’s approach to “stop departures at any cost” shows “a complete disregard for the lives and dignity of migrants and refugees,” says @evegeddie . @amnesty has long documented the hellish conditions faced by migrants & refugees in Libya.

As reported by @NikolajNielsen, @magnusbrunner admitted the Libyan authorities are ‘a bit dodgy’ but plans to ramp up EU support anyway. This enables Libya to intercept thousands of people at sea every year & return them to detention.

Ten years ago this week, the 709 Crackdown led to the unjust prosecution & persecution some of China’s most diligent human rights lawyers & legal activists. But it was just the start of a decade-long assault on human rights & the rule of law that shows no signs of abating today.

The EU’s return & ‘safe country’ proposals weaken access to asylum, downgrade people’s rights & increase the risk of refoulement & arbitrary detention in countries outside the EU. 50+ NGOs call on the EU to reject attempts to weaken protections further. 🔗

The EU must champion human rights in Europe and globally – including at the UN - and defend the rule of law & hard won gains in human rights law that are now under attack.

The Danish presidency must put human rights at the heart of tech advancement. Tech firms have long facilitated discriminatory and authoritarian practices. EU must regulate new technologies, prevent abuse of surveillance tools & AI that entrenches discrimination and inequality.

The EU is in deregulation overdrive. It is not too late to block ‘simplification’ proposals & ensure these laws are protected. @eu2025dk must show strong leadership and avoid undermining precious human & digital rights, environment and climate protections.

@eu2025dk must ensure a rights compliant approach and encourage investment into resilient asylum systems in the EU.

These proposals will lead to human rights violations, waste millions of euros and alienate allies – at a time when the EU needs friends. They show an alarming disregard for international law and evidence-based policy.

Amnesty International has raised concerns about the worrying direction the EU plans to take on migration and asylum. Recent proposals to ‘offshore’ returns or asylum obligations are a new low in Europe’s treatment of migrants.

Amid growing risks & tensions in the EU’s neighborhood @eu2025dk should also ensure that EU enlargement remains firmly anchored in respect for human rights & the rule of law. Losing sight of these values, will also mean losing its transformative power.
