Let’s say it again together: “Vibes aren’t evidence.” . We must band together and use evidence-based practices to expect that basic reading proficiency is a reasonable expectation for *all* students by third grade — regardless of race, SES, trauma history, or zip code.
I get that Lucy Calkins felt like a “way in” for some—but for whom? Since 2012, reading scores have declined across the board in this teacher’s district. By 2021, just ~39% of Black students were proficient vs. 74%+ of White students. Vibes aren’t evidence. The data says:.

Last year a low achieving reader had a behavior plan that gave him three “strategies” to use in class. All three of them were hot passes to other places in the building with snacks. Then everyone wondered why he wouldn’t stay in class 🤦♀️ Let me teach him to READ!.
"Altruistic Gaslighting": Using Social-Emotional Learning to manage trauma from inadequate reading programs. Teaching kids to manage emotions, calm down, and avoid disruption while adults project nobility, love, and care, without addressing the daily trauma of illiteracy.

I met my first Roblox-addicted 6th grader in late 2018. Since then, Roblox has become so much worse. I still see 6th graders who are addicted. Here’s a peek at the current class action lawsuits against Roblox: .
