Oat plant breeder. Dad and cat person. Thoughts are mine from years of infield experience + data-driven decisions.

Talking #Oats with Ben Hunt Bordertown @GRDC_NVT. Goldie and Minnie dry sown crops look amazing with ~300mm GSR and no profile. With more oat products and sales targets on the horizon, exciting times ahead #Bluelakemilling

We've seen some tipping in Minnie + Mitika background if sprayed with tebaconazole (prosaro) fungicide. Especially bad if any moisture stress. Goldie appears better for bacterial blight. I think dense, erect Minnie canopy has favoured humidity and thus blight.
@brill_ag @GarrenKnell @KerriskBrent @theGRDC Iβd be interested in any commentary from your day on tolerance to mcpa and fungicides. Minnie left yellowed after mcpa and proliconazole. Kingbale and Goldie pretty much unaffected.

Yep, CBH #Oat seg at Grass Patch, train to Perth. Yields look strong again this year from lower inputs. Trials with different agronomy by @SEPWA_ag near Beaumont look great!!! Harvest soon will tell the story. Thxs
@Tedthekelpie @AllanRattey @theGRDC Possibly in the Grass Patch, Salmon Gums area, though I have no data to back that up. CBH were ringing around asking about yields and possibly aggregating some oats at the Grass Patch bin after harvest.

Several growers with oats via @SEPWA_ag, NGN project. We have better varieties (yield and test weight), agronomy info with positive pre-em responses from deep sowing, Oats in rotation should work. Marketing maybe the trick.
@AllanRattey @theGRDC Anyone growing oats in Esperance? Lower frost risk, no end users to deliver to and only CBH pricing

Oats at its' ideal sowing window, Esperance port zone. Strips at Grass Patch sown 13th April, spring wheat badly frosted, winter wheat just flowering vs #Oats basically untouched by frost or heat, Goldie harvest late October. Highlight crop diversity as frost mitigation tool

On my way @AusFodder on GC. No #Oats here, but thanks @Qantas pilot QF934 for heads up when we'd fly over Kati Thanda Lake Eyre. Quite spectacular π and vegetation change with water is amazing ππ»

This is probably too late to graze. The key to grazing #Oats needs research, as per Wheat/Canola farming systems investment. Some research has shown early April sowing clip graze at stem elongation appears ok + delay phenology, if enough rain and N added back in.
@MerinoSi Would grazing at this (rather late) stage help to re-set those plants? Based on some research I was involved in, Oats typically suffered more of a yield penalty from grazing than Barley and Wheat. But in this case it might be warranted. π€·ββοΈ @AllanRattey

Interaction of #Oats sowing depth and pre-Em safety is exciting research @theGRDC in WA @FaceyGroup and NSW. Sowing #Oats deeper as mesocotyl+coleoptile length is >110mm from WA 2023, and utilised Marrar 2025 for deep sowing late April @InterGrain1 breeding trials.
@brill_ag @theGRDC The mesocotyl of oats (wild oats in the pic below) pushes the crown and sec roots towards the surface. Wheat & barley don't. Much harder to keep herbicide away from important parts of the seedling. Excellent knife point set up is even more critical in oats.

Oops. Correction. Emergence for Oats before 12-hour day *ENDS* needs testing!!! That's ~4th-10th April, depending on latitude. Thxs
Across years and sites, Goldie and Minnie #Oats hold maturity well from early (often deep) sowing after 10th April in WA. @GRDC_NVT today. Flag leaf and great biomass vs dry sown wheat in back. But sowing earlier than 12-hour day needs testing.

3 amazing weeks camping thru Nth WA. Stunning scenery!!! Sunset and Stairway to Moon at Broome, Horizontal Falls. Plus Cygnet Bay, part of Gibb River Rd, Crocs at Windjana Gorge, 80 Mile etc. 7400klm, so 20klm detour to see Minnie #Oats worthy it!!

Yes, we definitely need a trial site in that area π I'm sure it'd be different Env and suited for future proofing research into heat tolerance
SURPRISE! Oats found on a trip to northern Australia on a centre pivot in the Pilbara. #oatconvert @AllanRattey @GrainIndustryWA

1st sowing looks great!!! Powering ahead with early start enabled by deep sowing
@pbl1972 @theGRDC @AllanRattey Thereβll be a fair bit of Goldie around this year and potentially moving forward. Possible segregations for end use

Goldie, Koala seed on farm this year; so robust test. Minnie next year. @GRDC_NVT shows yield upside+ strong milling grain package, especially Goldie. Link of lignin with feed value needs retesting and investment. Current info is old from small dataset (varieties and sites).

Depth limit depends on seed size + quality, soil temp, and how heavy soil is. We've had no issues at 4" (100mm) in loamy sand for high-quality seed in April/May for #Oats.
@AllanRattey @Christo58521242 @TanuAngelia @kalyx_australia @PhenologyisFun @DPIRDbroadacre How deep, Allan? Is there a limit with oats? River loams Williams, WA. I've just put oats in at 1.5". Bannister and Minnie.

Oats are Just Right for early sowing into deep moisture. No rain in sight, @Christo58521242 put #Oat seed down fert tube ~2 weeks ago near Wagga. Happy days!!! Initial research with CSIRO + DPIRD for WA sand, but works in soil East Coast too π
