Glad to be enrolling older women in our TReatment of Incontinence for Underlying Physical and Mental Health (TRIUMPH) trial—it’s time to study medication effects beyond the bladder:

Neither panacea nor poison: the swinging pendulum of menopausal hormone therapy

Few medications have captured the imagination—and provoked such ire—as menopausal hormone therapy. For decades, MHT has served as a lightning rod for medical and cultural debate about management of menopause, aging, and women’s health. https://t.co/2ok9l9tedE

Hot flashes can be emotionally distressing for midlife women—but will treating hot flashes improve mood? Clinicians caring for women with both hot flashes and mood symptoms should consider other factors affecting psychological function. @MenopauseJrnl

Delighted to have collaborated with @MenopauseOrg's @StephFaubionMD and @JAMAInternalMed's Deborah Grady to review the available evidence, including about newer nonhormonal treatment options for vasomotor symptoms, such as neurokinin-3 receptor antagonists.
While hormone therapy is the most effective treatment for vasomotor symptoms, nonhormonal options like SSRIs/SNRIs, gabapentin, and oxybutynin offer modest efficacy.

A great loss—one of the very few, and definitely one of the most impactful, large-scale prospective studies conducted by the NIH to improve our understanding and management of aging and chronic disease in women in the U.S.
Every woman, I repeat, every woman of every age, every color, every political affiliation should condemn this, should raise their voice about this, should be terrified about this.
