Nobody's questioning Messi's talent or the reverence/respect he deserves for his play. But I have even more respect for someone like Diego Valeri who came to America, starred in MLS, became a Portland icon, and not only learned English, but now is on TV as a bilingual analyst.

@AlexiLalas Messages like this one don’t add anything. He is a soccer player, we should not care about his inability to speak English. Let me remind you that people that don’t speak English are the ones keeping the MLS alive and relevant.

I was conjugating Italian verbs in my hotel room first night I arrived. Italians didn't care I was mixing English, Spanish and Italian, they just respected the effort. It enabled me to understand what was being said and it even gave me some grace on the field...which I needed.

@AlexiLalas How easy/difficult was it for you in Italy to pickup the language & cultural norms? Were they patient with you?

Sure, Messi not speaking English (publicly) leaves commercial money on table. He's already amassed incredible generational wealth. But when you're a guest in a country, I've found that nothing endears you more and confers more respect than taking the time learning the language.

@AlexiLalas Do you think Messi is missing a massive commercial opportunity by not speaking English in ads or interviews, especially while being in the U.S. spotlight? Feels like untapped financial upside. Curious if you agree.

Yup, prop bets are ripe for athletes to fix. You justify it in your mind that it doesn't really matter or affect the outcome, so you're not really cheating. Oh what a tangled web we weave...

@AlexiLalas Match fixing is easier to spot than prop bets. A basketball example might be betting on someone to score the most points in the 3rd quarter or who wins the opening tipoff. A soccer example might be who the first person to get a yellow card or something like that. Hard to catch!

Yes, but given Italy's history, they were vigilant. Closest I saw was later in season in games where a tie and a point served both teams. On the field, it was made clear to me (the American) that there was an unspoken agreement to just go through motions and kill the clock.

Never saw match fixing when I was playing, but could have happened. MLS was always concerned because of relatively lower pay of players. The less players make, the more incentive they have to risk. Which makes this gambling scandal with NBA coach/players even more ridiculous.

Like you, there're many who experienced and have memories of the summer of 1994 through lens of the World Cup. It was peak 90s and a transcendent cultural touchstone. I hope next summer has that type of impact (and more) on a whole new generation. That's power...that's legacy.

Sports/politics often intertwined w/ parallels. Both reflect culture. Both have winners/losers, heroes/villains, & scoreboard. Both feed on personality, tribalism, emotion, & theater. Both require skills. Both defer to arbiters (ref/judge). But politics consequences dwarf sports.
