baseball topic for INF’s: what does “soft hands” mean to you? can you “define” via video and also how you verbally cue players you work with? @ThatGuy__Kai @RonsWashington @DirtBrosInfield I would sincerely appreciate your input.

Younger catchers looking to improve your game…you’re going to see 90-120 pitches/game. The overwhelming # of those…you’re job is to catch them (in the air). The other 5-15% you’ll need to block more than you throw. Train accordingly - but be REALLY GOOD at the catching part!!.

Is there a typical expectation of what a run & gun should translate to off of the mound or as a position player?@drivelinebases @DrivelineBB.

Every parent of an athlete in any sport, read pages 18-25 of Movement Over Maxes by @ZachDechant. Read it out loud so you hear the message clearly. #gold #movewell #movereallywell.

I am however promoting that young catchers work like maniacs and become REALLLLLLLLLY good at catching. Work at it. Try new stances. Experiment. But always remain focused on CATCHING the ball - it’s (arguably) the single most important part of the job!.

Before we blanket youth catchers with the same set up as what the best catchers on the planet do for a living, we need to make sure they can catch, consistently. I’m not bashing 1KD.

These guys are really good at catching. And they are now manipulate the strike zone 🛋🤴well! For younger catchers, the first thing you have to be REALLY good at is catching. Literally, catching.

Add to that, the timing it takes to manipulate borderline pitches so they look like a strike?? It takes a serious amount of practice, focus, physical strength AND a guy on the mound who is capable of repeating his delivery extremely consistently.

Catching is not easy. Catching 90+ is not easy. Catching a late breaking slider is not easy. Catching a change-up that fades into a right-handed batter or disappears down as it enters the strike zone is not easy.

We also tend to overlook how many reps these guys get every day! And, that the guys on the mound are very consistent with their control and command of 2 or more pitches.

However, when we think about the arms at the MLB level that are REALLY GOOD with filthy secondary pitches, we often overlook how physically strong catchers at the big league level are with their hands, wrists, forearms, and shoulders.

Trying to square up a pitch at the bottom of the zone is really really hard. Pitchers are taught to throw down hill and locate “lower” in the zone. 1KD allows for a catcher to present a lower glove target in order to help his pitcher, visually, find the bottom of the zone.

So often what is seen at the MLB level trickles down to youth levels. For example, 1 knee down catching. IMP, there is 1 main reason this setup has gained league wide use: hitting is really hard! And, trying to square up a pitch at the bottom of the zone is really really hard.
