Hot off the press: my new paper finding *positive* effects of home-country Internet expansion on immigrants' health and well-being in @AEAjournals. Effects increase with strong cross-border family ties and weaken with local social integration. Link:

💡 Big picture:. The Internet & social media often get blamed for harming mental health—but this study shows another side: 🌐➡️😊 for immigrants!. Yet, my JMP (pinned) highlights an important trade-off: 🌐 also ⬇️ social & economic integration of immigrants. 📄 Full paper:.

🤔 Why? Two main potential (to be explored) channels:.1️⃣⬇️Separation costs: Staying connected with family, friends & familiar content is valuable. 2️⃣ Positive social comparisons: Immigrants ⬆️comparisons to home-country peers (often poorer) as opposed to destination peers. (5/6).

⚖️Who benefits from the home-country Internet the most?. ✔️ First-gen immigrants.✔️ Those less socially integrated at destination.✔️ Those with strong family ties back home.✔️ Younger immigrants (more active online). Some of the HTEs on the Figure below. (4/6)

🔎 Main finding:. Better home-country Internet ⬆️ immigrants' happiness & health—by as much as moving from 5th to 8th income decile! 📈. Check the figures with TWFE and event-study (event is a 3G emergence in the home country) results. (3/6)
