This holiday is officially a black eye for the Chi-Mexican community. Domestic terrorists fighting cops & drunken clowns making rodeos of roadways, the last 2 nights have been vile, ignorant, & embarrassing. TY to 8th Dist, Streets & San, & vols for attacking the clean up.
.
@ChicagosMayor
’s comments comparing the deaths of a gangbanger & an officer were wrong. A hero fallen is a tragedy. Ofc. Preston’s death marked the end of a short but beautiful life of service & sacrifice. If we truly value her gift, we see there is no comparison.
The City should SUSPEND all event permits that rely on CPD staffing and force organizers to pay for 100% private security. Cancelled RDO’s should be reserved for public EMERGENCIES, not music festivals & street parades.
#GiveThemABreak
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. (Matthew 5:9)
A child of God she was, and remains.
And she will never be forgotten.
Tonight we pray, tomorrow we mourn. And then we keep fighting for what he stood for: law, order, and justice. God bless this officer, CPD, and the 008th District.
I'm deeply concerned by the direction our city is headed and families are tired of feeling unsafe in their neighborhoods. Join me in supporting Paul Vallas for Mayor! Thank you to the Vasquez family for hosting a huge turnout event for Paul Vallas at the Red Barrel Restaurant.
It shouldn’t be like this. You have been demonized, demoralized, and slandered. You stand in the face of danger without rest or relief. Abandoned by superiors, alienated from family, and scapegoated by politicians. It feels like an endless cycle. (1/4)
Paul Vallas shares my commitment prioritizing public safety by giving officers the tools needed to keep us safe, training & recruitment to meet the needs of 21st Century policing, & needed investments in officer wellness. I’m w/ Paul because problems need solutions, not slogans.
There is too much at stake for anyone who wants to raise a family in a safe neighborhood. We are going to vote to elect Paul Vallas as our next Mayor of Chicago.
#VamosConVallas
Leaving home today for a neighborhood 5k for 1st responders, I saw the ambulance & squad cars down the block. As the race started, I heard her name. Crossing the finish line, I saw her picture. My heart is broken for her loss & the pain she must have felt. And I am furious.
As a proud Mexican-American, I’m outraged by the lawlessness & mayhem caused by people “celebrating” Mexican Independence Day in recent days. We lost control of the streets downtown & in our neighborhoods. (1/3)
Latinos know prosperity comes when opportunity meets hard work. And Paul Vallas knows we can create opportunity for all of Chicago with practical solutions, not by defunding the police and raising taxes in working families.
Let's be clear, PCI's will NOT make one person safer in this city. PCI's do not stop beatings, murders, looting, rape, or carjackings. Having officers equipped for proactive policing and aggressively going after criminals is what we need. We need to
#BringBackTACT

Come Monday, the mayor can terminate 1/4 of CPD under her mandate. That's insane. We're calling on the mayor to stop the madness and let's hash this out like adults!
If that’s how
@chicagosmayor
truly feels, why doesn’t she cancel Madigan’s attorney Mike Kasper’s contract with the city to be the architect of their back room deal map? I’m no handmaiden, but the Madigan machine IS on the city’s payroll.
Thank you ISP and CPD for bringing this offender to justice. I call on the State Attorney’s office to prosecute as a felony and not plead down to a misdemeanor. We need to send a message that we will protect our fallen heroes’ memories.
To my colleagues who want to get more people vaccinated, I agree w/ u. But what makes more people willing to get vaccinated? 50 Alders who pass a policy based on collaboration and inclusion, or 1 mayor who has stormed off from the bargaining table & issued a mandate by force?
Officer wellness IS officer safety; and officer safety IS public safety.
Today I joined colleagues and families of fallen officers who unveil a package of reforms to force our police department back on track and provide families the support and respect they deserve. (1/10)
**IF YOU HAVE NOT VOTED, PLEASE STOP READING AND GO VOTE NOW!!!** Vallas momentum is taking over the SW Side. Last night I joined

Ofc. Strouse didn't hesitate to keep us safe. Hector Delgado didn't hesitate to pull the trigger murdering Ofc. Strouse. Brian didn't come home, but Delgado might, unless we speak up. Sign my letter demanding Delgado's clemency petition be DENIED.
With a system that is more punitive to police than criminals, it is no wonder we are seeing the level of crime under this administration. Police officers are getting fired while criminals are getting paid. Read more in our Op-Ed in the Tribune.
Residents are being taxed out of their homes and efforts to defund the police make our families and officers less safe. I'm with Paul Vallas because we need a problem-solver on the 5th Floor who will work to improve the city for ALL residents

I used to walk 26th Street as young girl about Melissa’s age with my abuelita. Now, as a mother and a lawmaker, I know when policies are passed solely in the name of “progress” at the expense of “punishment,” chaos will grow and we’ll lose more innocent children. 1/2
As expected today, the mayor moved to silence debate on the ordinance that will restore fairness for city workers and help avoid a PUBLIC SAFETY CRISIS created by our mayor’s actions. I’m not surprised at all at her actions. We are going to keep working. THIS IS NOT OVER!
While I was re-elected, the election's not over yet! Now, we need a mayor who shares our values:
@PaulVallas
. His focus on public safety and economic development will help turn our city around. Cast your early vote ballot this week!

The bureaucrats at COPA have no right and ZERO decency to criticize this fallen hero after her death. They should know better. I think they do, but don't care. Apologize now.

Advocates disrupted a public forum & heckled families of victims.
Chicago, where the angry mob dictates policy to

Mayor Brandon Johnson is expected to announce that he won’t renew the city’s controversial contract with ShotSpotter, making good on a key campaign promise to do away with the gunshot detection system.
The mayor’s job is NOT to be the boss of city workers. It’s to manage the city in a way that is best for the wellbeing for the residents. Pushing a mandate that has the potential to lay off thousands of city workers, including 1/4 of CPD is wrongheaded and foolish.
“This policy, this mandate, to fire thousands of workers, including police officers in the middle of a public safety crisis, is equivalent to bringing gasoline to a house fire,” said Ald. Silvana Tabares (23rd).
Great time w/
@EileenCookCnty
in Garfield Ridge! As Dem. committeeman, I'm tired of
@cookcodems
claiming to support women but backing a corp. lobbyist who hasn't seen a court room in decades over a highly-qualified woman like Eileen. Experience & the law > political ideologies.
Happy Saturday!
I had a great time meeting voters across Cook County this morning. Election Day is just 10 days away & early voting is open now. I’m not taking a single vote for granted and I hope to earn your support.
Thank you to

St. Jude is the patron saint of two things: the Chicago Police Department and lost causes. One cannot overlook the irony (or wisdom) of marrying these two, a big city department and struggles in vain. (1/6)
Proud to stand w/ my colleagues in blocking Lightfoot’s COPA chief’s appt. even after she pushed a suspension for fallen hero Ofc. French. CALL your alderman & ask them to join us in sending a message that our fallen heros should be HONORED, not “suspended.”
#HoldCOPAccountable
With Mayor Lightfoot's nominee to lead COPA blocked in committee, the mayor can try to whip votes and bring Kersten back for consideration, nominate someone else, or wait until a new civilian oversight commission is in place to make the appointment.
When a mayor, alderman, or any elected asks you for a vote, ask them what they’ve done to stop the spread of chaos. Then ask for proof. Their silence speaks volumes. We’ll say her name. 2/2

Officer Joel Gordils was dragged by a car during a traffic stop and slammed into a pillar near 95th/Lafayette in 2020.
He had brain surgery and suffered a broken back, a broken jaw and a torn shoulder.
He's now on no-pay status as his medical time off has run out.
This is the result of a consistent and deliberate attempt by local & state politicians to dismantle & restrict our police department, as well as institute policies & laws like the SAFE-T Act & the no pursuit policy, among others, that embolden and validate this behavior. (2/3)
The mayor promised a “Summer of Joy” but so far it’s been the Summer from Hell. Today,
@RLopez15thWard
, myself, and colleagues called for a council mtg to push Supt Brown, Parks Supt. Escareño and CPS CEO Pedro Martinez for their plans/solutions.
When you feel the darkness ask for help. The person you seek out may also be hurting. You may be saving them too. So much of the city may have failed you. But I am not giving up. I will never stop fighting for you. And trust me, there’s MORE FIGHT that’s about to come. (3/4)
Children grow up in your absence and life goes on as you stand post amidst the chaos. They have gutted the force and use you to patch the cracks of their own doing. You refuse to call off because you don’t want to leave your brothers and sisters shorthanded. (2/4)
1/3 - In the pandemic’s darkest days, the City Council chambers stood dim and silent. And just outside, first responders labored amongst the flames and broken glass to fight lawlessness and violence.
The CPD officer shot this past Wednesday has been released from the hospital this morning. As she left, she was met with hundreds of officers and command staff. Wishing her a speedy recovery.

As a former state rep, the question isn’t just if you voted for the SAFE-T Act, but what are you doing to FIX it?
Here are our local reps to call and ask:

Rep. Ortiz 773-236-0117

It was a Golden Day in Garfield Ridge. Thank you to Local 150 for another successful St. Patrick’s Day Parade that brought together our community to support Danny Golden and all our first responders!
The streets of Chicago are dangerous enough for police. And the policies of the administration should not add to this burden but should instead equip officers to best protect the public.
- Mandate all civilian officials with police oversight to complete use of force training and testing, including scenario-based instances. Results and body-worn camera footage to be published for public access. (6/10)

For those who say we have to settle now to save money down the road, that logic falls apart when we settle so many cases that plaintiffs expect getting paid. The costs are compounded. We save money when we say NO to bad settlements.
Tabares says she's voting against the settlement: "This is a justified but unfortunate situation — settling sends a bad message to police officers, when they have to make these split second decisions."
There is only ONE civilian oversight panel that’s elected by the public, and it’s the City Council. EVERYONE else is a political appointee. The CCPSA deserves critique like any public body. They need to be looking at qualifications & not picking winners and losers.

Thank you to our men and women of CPD's 8th District for joining us and keeping our families safe this Halloween weekend. And thank you to the Midway Chamber of Commerce for organizing this year's Pumpkin Jamboree Parade. Stay safe everyone!

Exactly, that's why we're adding it to the MCC laws. As I'm sure you're aware, our state's attorney isn't well known for enforcing the state laws. Aldermen can't change state laws, but I'm trying to use the tools that we have.

Ald. Silvana Tabares after her effort to force a special City Council meeting fizzled: “Perhaps the mayor needs to be reminded that she has her own deadline pending to be put under no pay status and that’s called Election Day, February of 2023."

How hypocritical of any City Council member to say “just get the shot & go back to work” when most got the vax shot, closed their offices, and hide behind Zoom screens all day for 18 months. Meanwhile, kids are mask-optional, bars are open & life is tilting back toward normalcy.
