When something goes wrong, the City should be held accountable. That's why we need robust, independent investigations. I'm proud to strengthen the integrity of those investigations, and am grateful to Dept leaders for working together to achieve this.

Trump's budget guts funding to replace lead pipes in Illinois. All to fund tax breaks that benefit the ultra-wealthy.

This is a pivotal moment for the CTA. We can make it safer, faster, and cleaner to get around the city. But not without a permanent leader or a real national talent search.

Finding justice in a courtroom can be long and draining. Families like Jayden's deserve to be supported every step of the way. The City needs to invest in projects like CAN Hope to create a 24/7 safe location with therapeutic, housing, and legal resources for survivors.

A jury reached a guilty verdict for Crosetti Brand after deliberations began Thursday. He was accused killing 11-year-old Jayden Perkins and injuring his pregnant mom in Edgewater.

Medical debt isn't an indicator of financial responsibility and shouldn't impact your ability to sign a lease. Disappointing but not surprising Trump sides with credit agencies over good policy. Chicago can help by forgiving years-old ambulance ride debt.

Evanston did it, and so can we. This week, I introduced legislation to do away with exorbitant move-in fees and fix our security deposit system.

It's common sense: carjacking victims shouldn't be on the hook for traffic tickets for their stolen vehicle. But that's been the City's policy. We should support victims, not add stress and cost. Today, my proposal to automatically dismiss these tickets passed in City Council.

Chicagoans have demanded new leadership at the CTA for years. Now, there's an opportunity to select an experienced and visionary leader to take on major challenges. A transparent, thorough national search should be conducted to attract and consider the best possible candidates.

Last week, Trump cut hundreds of millions of dollars from violence prevention, including in Chicago. Political posturing and fear mongering doesn't keep anyone safe. If he were serious about our safety, he'd invest in (not defund) data-driven, lifesaving programs like these.

Crime is out of control, and rapidly getting worse. Look what is going on in Chicago and our inner cities. Not good!.

The first few years of a child's life are some of the most important for development. Head Start helps families in those years by providing child care and other support systems. Trump's proposed cuts will leave students less prepared to succeed in elementary school and beyond.

Earlier this year, I introduced legislation to bar people with ties to anti-government extremist groups from City employment. I look forward to working with my colleagues to getting it done.

As the Trump administration steps aside, we need local leaders to step up. Just last week, City Council did just that by barring Jan 6th insurrectionists from being hired by City government. But we can do more. 2/.

People who want to overthrow government shouldn't be able to collect a government paycheck. But the Trump administration is dismantling the ability of the federal government to root out anti-government extremism. 1/.

Two months after Mayor Brandon Johnson formed a task force to examine how to rid the CPD with ties to extremist and anti-government groups, the effort has yet to show any sign of public progress.

We can't afford backsliding on air quality in Chicago. That means we need bold action that confronts the reality of climate change, including:. 🚏Expand bus lines.🚆Rehab aging El infrastructure.🚶Safer streets for pedestrians and bikers.🔌More public EV chargers.

That’s why I introduced legislation calling for City Council hearings on single-use plastics. We need to uplift experts’ research on the biological and environmental impacts of our plastic consumption, and how we can reduce it.

The fossil fuel industry may triple plastics production by 2050, which means more debris from synthetic textiles, bottles, and bags in our landfills and waterways. And once they’re ingested, excessive amounts of microplastics can worsen cardiovascular and respiratory problems.

Each year, 22 million pounds of plastic enters the Great Lakes, including Lake Michigan, our largest source of public drinking water. Microplastics end up in our soil and waterways, directly impacting our bodies and the environment. And the problem is growing.
