I’ve recently been advising some people who are starting a company.
It went like this:
Them: “Should we file for an LLC?”
Me: “No, sell your first $1,000 of product.”
Them: “Should we open a business bank account?”
Me: “No, sell your first $1,000 of product.”
Them: “Don’t
I’ve tested positive for coronavirus.
I just got the call about fifteen minutes ago. They’re telling me not to go to the hospital unless I have shortness of breath. They prescribed me a stronger cough medicine. My fever broke two days ago, which is a good sign.
Good news! I’ve been fever-free for almost 40 hours. 🥳
Saturday, 1:30 AM Pacific - fever of 100.9. Took acetaminophen. Since then, I’ve held a normal body temperature, without the aid of additional pills.
After a week of ranging from 102.4 - 103.7 degrees, this is huge.
I think the worst of my
#covid19
is behind me. I'm coughing a ton and sleeping 15-18 hours a day, but I'm no longer coughing so hard that I'm afraid of fracturing a rib, as I used to be ... now I have more moderate coughs. I've been fever-free since Saturday.
I hate to break this news to you, but …
Today's mortgage interest rates are historically normal.😖
From 1971 to 2015, mortgage interest rates ranged from 4.6 percent to 16.6 percent.
During the majority of those years, average rates spanned 6 to 10 percent.
Today's interest
Dave Ramsey’s nine-minute rant proves several things:
1️⃣ you command attention by having a strong viewpoint, not an accurate one
2️⃣ a confident delivery can make even the most moronic ideas sound plausible
3️⃣ people don’t rally behind what they can’t understand, so …

Financial independence isn't the end goal, it's the starting point. Once you reach FI, the real work begins: finding out how to live each day in a meaningful way.
Update: continuing to rest and recover my strength after battling
#COVID19
. I’m fatigued and coughing, but my fever is gone, and I can tell that a recovery is ahead.
I’m one of the lucky ones.
Update: I’m exhausted. The smallest things, like using the toilet or pouring a glass of water, are utterly draining. I’m sleeping at least 18 hours a day. The fever has been gone for more than 72 hours. Coughing a lot, but I think the cough medicine is helping.
#COVID19
Results: I officially tested negative for COVID-19 and tested positive for the IgG antibodies. 🥳
(This is from a nasal swab test that I took last week ... earlier, on March 26, I tested positive for
#covid
and was sick AF. Now I have official confirmation that I’ve recovered!)
So, um ... I’m very flattered, but I would like to clarify that I’m still alive.
I’ve always loved that famous Mark Twain quote, “Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated.” I can’t believe I finally get to use it! 😱
Savings tip:
If you’re making a purchase online, especially at a mid-size website (bigger than mom-and-pop, but not as big as Target or Amazon) — move your cursor near the “back” arrow on the browser. This is called “exit intent,” and it often triggers pop-ups w/ discount codes
I'm exhausted, and I will not be silenced anymore. I won't tell you his name or identity, but I will speak my truth. And the truth is that I'm a domestic violence survivor and a sexual assault survivor. I'm a robbery survivor. And I will continue to speak out. /11 /endthread
Many years ago, I was in an abusive relationship. He hit me, repeatedly. He pushed me into walls. He punched me in the face. He clamped his hand over my mouth so that I couldn't scream, and then he hit me. Over. And over. And over. Now he's trying to silence me through a lawsuit.
Words cannot describe how sick I have felt over the past week. Please, anybody who dismisses COVID-19 by thinking that if you’re young and healthy, your experience won’t be that bad… I’m here to tell you that even so-called “mild” or “moderate” cases are brutal. Stay home.

They raised the limits!! Next year (2019) we can all contribute $19k to a 401k and $6k to an IRA, a total of an extra $1k over the current contribution limits. Nerds celebrate!!!!
Until you reach financial independence, you’ll trade time for money. This means you’re exchanging something rare and non-replicable for something of lesser value. That’s a losing trade.
Money is the tool that allows you to stop making this lopsided trade.
Is anyone else constantly distracted? I’m finding it particularly hard to stay on task these days. I just want to keep reading news articles and escaping into Netflix.
Too many people think “personal finance” is budgeting and frugality.
Too few people realize that it’s actually about reframing your mindset to THINK BIG, create value, invest, reinvest, grow.
I'll be very excited for when my quarantine ends and I can leave my condo.
I want to go to the parking garage, or to the room with the trash chute. Or to the lobby. Or the mail room. I'd just like to walk down the hallway again.
Ahhh, dreams and goals.
Society holds strange ideas around money.
If we spend $15,000 on a Honda Civic, nobody questions us. No one asks, “How could you afford it?” or exclaims, “You’re soooo lucky!”
But if we spend $15,000 scuba-diving in the South Pacific, people raise eyebrows. They assume we’re
OMG IT'S THE 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF AFFORD ANYTHING ... and I didn't even realize it until right now. 😂 The blog launched on Feb 22, 2011.
HOLY CRAP what a crazy decade it's been.
To the next 10 years and beyond!!
Many years ago, one of my blog readers emailed me with a short story that forever changed my money attitude.
I had been railing against “luxury” expenses like pedicures and massages.
He emailed and said that ever since his son died, getting a weekly massage was one of the ways
Hey, that’s me!

The I-Team had an exclusive interview with a Las Vegas woman who is recovering from the virus and doesn't fall into any high risk group.
Research shows that making frequent, small purchases -- e.g. the occasional Starbucks treat -- has a greater impact on happiness and life satisfaction than occasional huge purchases.
Purchases that create ongoing convenience (e.g. hiring a weekly housecleaner, or sending your
I’ve heard a lot of people say, “I didn’t save anything this year because I was paying down debt.” I would argue that you saved a ton.
Saving is anything that improves your net worth.
Yes, keep a rainy day fund, but don’t limit “save” to a narrow context.
1/ Update: Recovery from COVID-19 is slow. I’m coughing and fatigued, my body hurts and I have a headache, and I’m definitely operating at 10% capacity. But this is a big improvement from last week. I can tell that I’m on the mend, but it’s going to take some time.
What’s the number one predictor of negative (crashing) home values?
It’s NOT higher interest rates.
It’s employment.
When unemployment is high, people are *forced* to sell their homes. Foreclosures and short sales spike.
By contrast, when unemployment is low (employment is
I've read 7 books so far this year (2019). This is one of my favorite benefits of not needing to commute or work for an employer. 😊 It's not about buying fancy crap or silly luxuries. It's about having time to sit in the sun with coffee and a book.
If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that our lives can change overnight; we must expect the unexpected and never become too comfortable or complacent.
This is true of our money, careers, businesses, investments, health, relationships and everything else that matters.
I can't believe I've spent the last 15 years declining to post photos in which I'm holding a beer -- because that's the advice I learned from Boomers.
And then they post pics of themselves storming the Capital.
Anyway, expect more beer photos from now on.
When I had COVID19, there were many times when I thought, "I should go to a hospital."
But I was too sick to drive.
I didn't want to ask anyone to drive me (and risk exposing them).
I didn't even want to take an ambulance unless it was life-threatening.
So WTF is this?
Money will solve your financial problems. But it won’t magically fix your health, mood, weight, relationships, or general dissatisfaction with life. If you want to improve anything, make it a priority. And take radical responsibility.
😂😂 I’ve been alcohol-free for more than 40 days and caffeine-free for almost 30 days (because I got sick), but I still think this graph is hilarious and spot-on.
True story: for years, I thought “birthday suit” referred to an outfit that you wore on your birthday
Whenever anyone mentioned one, I would think, “awww I don’t have a birthday suit 😢”

I’ve seen plenty of confident people succeed, even if they’re marginally or moderately skilled/talented.
I’ve also seen plenty of highly skilled/ talented people falter and hold themselves back, due to a lack of confidence.
Confidence > competence, as a predictor of outcomes
OMG! I love
@SuzeOrmanShow
's new Facebook post about what she loves about FIRE! How wonderful! I have huge respect for this post, and I'm glad she understands the movement.
Reminder: We're living in a pandemic and it's okay to chill on the couch binge-watching Black Mirror while eating peanut butter from the jar. (Suspiciously specific example, I know. 🤓)
Don't kick yourself if you realize your motivation has taken a dip. Let yourself breathe.
I can’t believe I have to say this, but for the record: It is deeply unethical to suggest that it’s OK, nbd, as long as most of the deaths are confined to Baby Boomers and people with chronic conditions. 🤦🏽♀️

I’ve always been kinda slow at getting stuff done, the type of person who takes my time at everything ranging from podcast production to article writing to cleaning the house, and now I finally understand why —
Cuz I vote in Nevada.
Stock market currently at June 2019 prices. We’ve rolled back the clock 10 months.
Lessons:
(1) Hold. Don’t panic sell. The market falls, then rises again.
(2) Even big crashes don’t turn back the clock far enough to justify sitting out off the game.
Instead of worrying about getting your act together, just focus on making progress, however small, one day at a time.
Besides, *nobody* has their act together.
Money is unlimited. If it slips away, we can make more.
Time is precious. Once it's gone, it’s gone.
Why squander time while clutching onto pennies?
It’s Thanksgiving. We’re coming up on the biggest deal-chasing day of the year. 🦃🥧
Don’t squander Black Friday driving around
Reminder: Don’t panic about the Wall Street collapse. These are the moments that define great investors. These are the moments that separate those who succeed, who emerge from pullbacks and recessions victorious, from those who realize losses. This too shall pass.
Dear “the gov’t shouldn’t restrict our freedom to risk infection” crowd:
1) Do you pledge to live alone? Otherwise, you are risking the lives of your kids & spouse.
2) Do you volunteer to waive all medical attention? Otherwise, you are risking the lives of healthcare workers.
Call me excessively decorous, but do you think perhaps it’s a little — um, shall we say, gauche — to criticize your debate opponent’s dead son?
Just sayin’
So I was cruising 65 mph down the freeway this morning, on my way to the dentist, and then this happened.
The lesson here, kids, is never go to the dentist 😬

High school biology review:
There’s a distinction between communicable diseases, such as SARS, MERS, smallpox, Ebola and Covid, vs. non-communicable diseases such as heart failure and strokes.
Let’s not conflate infectious diseases with non-communicable ones.
The harassment continues: The person who threatened me while I had COVID19, and then filed legal docs claiming I “wasn’t sick enough,” dismissing and invalidating my illness in a court filing, just sent a letter to my attorney asking me not to post about it on Twitter. 🤯 BULLY
The thing about quarantine is that we’re all nestled inside our cocoons, and when we come out, we’re gonna be transformed into butterflies. 🦋
Or zombies. Butterflies or zombies.

Beware of sunk-cost fallacy: Sure, you've invested money/time into something. But if it's a bad idea, cut your losses and walk away. Look ahead, not behind.

I've been trying to figure out how to reply to "All lives matter" in a way that changes hearts and minds.
