Renewables don't risk blackouts, said the media. But they did and they do. The physics are simple. And now, as blackouts in Spain strand people in elevators, jam traffic, and ground flights, it's clear that too little "inertia" due to excess solar resulted in system collapse.

They are “less predictable” and a sudden change on weather, production-consumption ratio or connection problem makes the network more susceptible to frequency oscillations that then cascades into a national blackout, affection other countries too because of the interconnection.

With the national Spanish blackout I just learnt something today. The hypothesis now is that could be due to the low inertia of renewables. Since solar and wind don’t provide this inertia is more difficult to maintain the frequency oscillations.

Before the outage hit, Spain was running its grid with very little dispatchable spinning generation, and therefore no much inertia. Solar PV/thermal + wind: ~78%.Nuclear: 11.5%.Co-generation: 5%.Gas-fired: ~3% (less than 1GW). Snapshot at 12.30pm local time (outage was 12.35pm)

After all we are doing this already with plants, modifying them, adding adaptations for surviving to climate change or pests. This adaptations in animals could be seen as something equivalent. A part from a good marketing strategy for the company with much bigger goals.

In this way they express similar characteristics although the underlying genes are totally different. In this case they mutated 10 genes related with their fur and fat metabolism using CRISPR. So “nothing new” although very interesting to see possible.

While you might think from reading the titles and looking at the pics that they added the genes of the woolly mammoth they didn’t. That would probably kill the embryos already. What they did was to mutate mice genes.

Been following @colossal for a while already. They want to de-extinct some animals. Bring back the woolly mammoth for example. Today my timeline is full with different articles on this “trial” with mice. There are cute and fluffy but there is a but.

They literally generate a new strand of DNA that they call “Xpandomer” that has more space between the nucleotides so can be read with more accuracy through Nanopore. For this they designed new nucleotides and enzymatic reactions that work together.

At @Roche they just developed a new technology that improves the Nanopore sequencing. @illumina can read small fragments with high accuracy while @nanopore traditionally can read longer fragments but has more errors. Roche has now tried to solve this by reducing the noise.

Shock Doctrine, the OODA Loop, and the Cognitive Paralysis of a Nation. There’s a reason everything feels like chaos right now. It’s not an accident—it’s a strategy. What Trump and his enablers are doing is straight out of the Shock Doctrine playbook: create relentless crises,.
