A timely & excellent thread … I did not appreciate the revolution that occurred post 1790’s … essentially bureaucratic, led by young administrators determined to learn and drive through reform … this book from Roger Knight was & is my go-to for this period.
On Trafalgar Day its worth looking at the post-1840 reforms that turned Britian's then often defeated navy into the precision instrument of victory wielded by Nelson and Pellew in the Napoleonic Wars. Many have resonance to this day.

Glad this truth is being spoken. Yes, its accelerated introduction to service in WW2 was necessary… its deficiencies & inefficiencies were known. It should have been withdrawn thereafter. Its continued service was borderline corporate manslaughter.

OTD in 1935, T.E. Lawrence died 6 days after crashing his Brough motorcycle. What a man. Scholar, archaeologist, soldier, diplomat, Arabist. What an achievement. And the man who made him famous, Lowell Thomas. Best biographer (IMHO): ex-SAS warrior & desert expert, Michael Asher
