While these are sizable challenges, none of them are insurmountable. But overcoming them can only happen if the scale is understood and addressed with urgency, creativity, and a willingness to acknowledge what has worked and what has not—with a ruthless focus on delivery.

We identify five questions that should drive a review of AUKUS: 1⃣ The numbers gap 2⃣ Australian sovereign concerns and allied planning 3⃣ Submarine industrial base investments 4⃣ Giving Pillar II tangible form and real capabilities 5⃣ Timeline, oversight, and shaping discourse.

Some concerns have surfaced around the initiative’s viability in the wake of reports that DOD plans to review the program. Yet considering these concerns as well as geopolitical impact and the significant resources involved, a thorough review of AUKUS by the US is necessary.

AUKUS stands as perhaps the boldest strategic declaration of the twenty-first century by the United States and its allies. Now, nearly four years after it was first announced, AUKUS has reached a critical juncture.
