While these are sizable challenges, none of them are insurmountable. But overcoming them can only happen if the scale is understood and addressed with urgency, creativity, and a willingness to acknowledge what has worked and what has not—with a ruthless focus on delivery.

We identify five questions that should drive a review of AUKUS:.1⃣ The numbers gap.2⃣ Australian sovereign concerns and allied planning.3⃣ Submarine industrial base investments.4⃣ Giving Pillar II tangible form and real capabilities.5⃣ Timeline, oversight, and shaping discourse.

Some concerns have surfaced around the initiative’s viability in the wake of reports that DOD plans to review the program. Yet considering these concerns as well as geopolitical impact and the significant resources involved, a thorough review of AUKUS by the US is necessary.

AUKUS stands as perhaps the boldest strategic declaration of the twenty-first century by the United States and its allies. Now, nearly four years after it was first announced, AUKUS has reached a critical juncture.

It's great to see the UK sending a robust Naval capability to the Indo-Pacific, working closely with another critical American ally! This demonstrates the resilience of these relationships, and sends a strong deterrence message to our potential adversaries.

HMS Prince of Wales in Darwin. This is a deeply impressive picture. Full complement of F-35Bs plus Merlin ASW helicopters. It has taken a long time, but we got there.

Glad to see the Royal Navy exercising its right to transit the Taiwan Strait. This is not an issue between China and the United States - it’s a global issue. 🇬🇧 🇺🇸 .

Secretary Hegseth's Shangri-La remarks are also interesting due to what was not said: . 🔷 Passing references to the ROK and ASEAN. 🔷 No mention of AUKUS. 🔷 No mention of tariffs or trade negotiations, which are fundamental issues with US allies and partners across the region.

3️⃣ Sounding a warning on Taiwan, saying that "the threat China poses is real, and it could be imminent.". 4️⃣ The stark contrast of his message with that of French President Macron, that Asia is looking to avoid aligning with either side of the US-PRC competition.

SecDef Hegseth just gave his speech at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, and these are my top takeaways:. 1⃣ His blunt description of US-PRC competition. 2️⃣ Sharp language for US allies in the Indo-Pacific, calling for them to do more to contribute to their own defense.
