If you do science, you are a scientist 💯💯💯 You have every right to ask questions, propose solutions, express doubt. No matter what level you are when you're doing scientific experiments The best moments in my workday are when our intern asks why or how

I do not normally respond to online rumors but feel the need to do so at this moment I will not be a candidate for the currently vacant HC and GM positions with the Miami Dolphins. While you never know what the future may bring right now my focus must remain on global events

My parents refused to allow me to take out loans for uni I wanted to go to med school (MD/PhD) and my mom told me to figure out how to pay for it through things like military service etc. Absolutely no loans. Instead, I went pure STEM PhD. Tuition paid + stipend = NO DEBT

Our federal student loan system is allowing financially iIIiterate students in their early 20s to take on up to $200,000+ in debt. And that debt cannot be discharged in bankruptcy. These degrees often have a pathway to very mediocre careers of $40K/year.

We went to Stagecoach one year. A friend (the most spontaneous, non-planner person you will ever meet) booked a Motel 6 AGES in advance at a regular rate. When we arrived, they tried to up the rate. No siree bob, we'll keep our ~$100/night Everyone else: $400+/night

My friend booked a cabin in the eclipse totality path TWO YEARS before the eclipse date so her boys could see it. Like a week or two before it was supposed to happen she got an email that her booking was cancelled. They reposted the listing for an astronomically higher rate.

I just learned--in a very public setting--that I've been saying a classic proverbial phrase incorrectly my whole life. The saying: “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.” What I've been saying: “Shoot for the stars. Even if you miss, you'll land on

Y'all, Texas registration and vehicle inspection is also insanely cheap. Take the same car to California. Yearly registration fee is EASILY double to triple that and the every 2 year SMOG went up again and now costs ~ $90 while Texas yearly is ~$25

I haven't renewed my car registration in years, and may never again. Why? Math: The ticket cost is $100 - $200, whether I'm 1 or 10+ years expired. It takes 1-2 annoying hours/year to get inspected and renew, and only 20 mins to get pulled over & pay the fine. Let's say I get

For us + 3 couples, we don't have enough real chairs for our dinner and card night, but guests "fight" to use the crappy, non-matching chairs We've also broken one of our 8 place settings. So someone always gets the black sheep plate We're there to enjoy each other's company

When we first got our own place I was super nervous about hosting because I was under the impression I didn’t have a big enough space to or the flow wasn’t right or I didn’t have enough seating at the dinner table. But then I thought about every house I’ve ever been hosted at

My downstairs neighbor has a cat (and his name is Bubba 😆) He really wants to go outside, especially when she has things to do. And the interaction is the most wholesome, hilarious conversation between cat owner and cat. She doesn't know it, but it always makes my day

Yeah. Hi. Bad news here. You know how we miseducated several generations because a handful of gurus convinced the edu-establishment that phonics was bad? Well, schools are about to do the same exact thing with math

One of my favorite grant writing memories is of a senior grad student (and a friend to this day) editing my NSF GRFP In the comments, he wrote the most convoluted, sarcastic, thesaurus-heavy comment the world had ever seen. He wrapped it up with: see, you can barely understand

Don't forget being the unlucky applicant who gets the reviewer that makes it their life's duty to tank the proposal in the study section simply because they don't agree with it (and no legitimate evidence why) Those people should be marked COI and removed from the discussion

NIH study sections are broken for a simple reason: good scientists have no incentive to serve on them. They get paid about $200 to review thousands of pages of grants — often a month’s worth of reading — and then sit in a cramped conference room for up to 10 hours with no food

And the NIH doesn't fund risk, they fund comfortable, pre-proven experiments. If you're established, you have the wiggle-room to do this. ECRs, not so much And. Try getting on an NIH panel as a non-academic ECR. Barriers to entry are so high that we eventually just give up

The public has no idea that U.S. biomedical research is run by an aging elite who captured the NIH system decades ago. A huge share of NIH funding goes to elderly investigators who established their careers in the 1980s and 1990s and have coasted on connections ever since. Fauci
