This is the best thing I’ve seen for years. Powerfully confronts the audience’s assumptions (while explaining the social model of disability to non policy wonks). Just brilliant

Many thanks to all the people who agreed to be interviewed for this documentary. Without clinical trial volunteers we would have no new medicines. I hope the programme gives a balanced view of the benefits and limits of the new drugs against Alzheimer’s.

Could two new drugs prove a turning point in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease?

Huge milestone in the search for a cure for dementia. Now that lecanemab has received full approval in the US, we look to the @MHRAgovuk, @NICEComms and @NHSEngland to ensure that these medicines are safe and effective, and ensure that UK patients can access them without delay
🚨 The @US_FDA has granted full approval for Alzheimer’s drug lecanemab.🚨 This news should serve as a wake-up call to get the @NHSuk ready for new medicines like #lecanemab. Our Chief Exec @HilaryAlzUK reacts 👇

Our new analysis finds that 1 in 2 people will be affected by dementia in our lifetime - either by developing it, or caring for someone - or both. We’re calling for urgent action to address this

Exciting to see a second drug with promising trial results. We urgently need new ways to detect and diagnose dementia earlier so that people can benefit from new treatments as soon as possible 🧠🔬🧬
Incredibly encouraging, and another hugely significant moment for dementia research. A second drug for Alzheimer’s – donanemab - has been shown to slow people’s cognitive decline in a rigorous phase 3 trial. Coverage here👇 https://t.co/L7qAFv4Kze

My verdict the Government’s new ‘Major Conditions Strategy’ - it had better be worth the wait! People with dementia need a strategy that improves diagnosis, treatment and care
Government's new ‘Major Conditions Strategy’ signals a new direction for people affected by dementia. And although its holistic approach, which aims to address issues faced by people living with a range of conditions including dementia, is welcome – it comes after a long wait⌛️

Exciting news about the first treatment to slow the decline with Alzheimer’s disease - but we’re at the start of a very long road to access on the NHS. We will do whatever we can to ensure people get new treatments without delay
If you've seen #lecanemab in the headlines today, you might be thinking - when will people living with dementia be able to access this drug? Access to any medicine is not a quick process, & there are several steps which need to be taken 👇

It seems baffling to me that the NHS expects a standstill medicines budget - patient access to the best new drugs is key to improving outcomes, and keeping pace with the continent

Right now, in the poorest parts of the UK people are dying earlier than people in wealthier areas. @SteveBarclay help us change this by helping people to protect their brain health throughout their lives and lower their risk of developing dementia 🧠
As a group of 47 organisations, we're calling on @SteveBarclay to ensure the prevention agenda is a key part of the #HealthDisparities White Paper. Publication could be delayed, but it's vital UK Govt prioritises action to reduce #HealthInequalities.

People with dementia urgently need new treatments. We hope that by working with other charities we can provide a platform for people to highlight the difference safe and effective medicines could make to their lives 💉🦠🧠🧬
At ARUK, we pride ourselves on being collaborative in how we work with colleagues & other organisations to drive change. In today's blog, Policy Advisor @GeorgeLankester talks about the Charity Medicines Access Coalition & its importance for people living with dementia.

We need to recognise the importance of an accurate and timely diagnosis, and consider how the NHS could adopt innovative diagnostic tools that help GPs manage their workloads and improve people with dementia’s experience of accessing care

GPs play an important role in supporting people with dementia, including diagnosis. With fewer GPs in the future, there’s a risk that people may go undiagnosed, unable to access appropriate care or take part in research that could unlock future treatments.
