(1/3) Thanks to @maggie_erewash for asking @andrealeadsom about her Dept's assessment on introducing an alcohol strategy following the shocking @ONS alcohol-specific deaths statistics yesterday, that there were over 10,000 deaths from alcohol in 2022 in the UK, an all time high.

(1/3) The @ONS has released the latest alcohol-specific death statistics, announcing that there were sadly 10,048 deaths from alcohol in 2022 in the UK – an all-time high, up 4.2% on the previous year, and 32.8% higher than when compared to 2019.

Alcohol-specific deaths have reached another record high, with 10,048 people dying in 2022. Our Chief Executive, Dr Katherine Severi, asks "How many more deaths are needed before the UK government wakes up?" https://t.co/fMpiKb5L85

UK Chancellor Jeremy Hunt today extended the real-terms cut on alcohol duty for six months, despite being told a tax rise would be among the most effective policies to combat the country's record alcohol deaths.

Alcohol Change UK is deeply disappointed with the announcement in today's Spring Budget by Jeremy Hunt, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, on the freeze in alcohol duty. #Budget2024 (1/5)

Yet again a Chancellor who freezes duty (cutting it in real terms) on the basis of it helping pubs. It doesn’t. It helps supermarkets. If you actually want to help pubs - the draught relief is literally a tax cut just for them. Why not use that?

We know that the price of alcohol is directly linked to alcohol harm. #alcoholduty You can help us change this. Write to your MP to ask them to show their support for an increase in alcohol duty at the upcoming Budget by writing to the Chancellor: https://t.co/9CRvo7Hj7B

We support the Chair of @APPGAlcoholHarm on the exclusion of evidence-based public health voices in this week’s @CommonsHealth evidence session on alcohol as part of their prevention inquiry. We look forward giving evidence in a second, impartial session on reducing alcohol harm.

I am concerned the recent Health Committee inquiry into prevention invited and heard oral evidence from the alcohol industry but not from those who advocate evidence based approaches into reducing alcohol based harm. I have written to the Chair in the hope this can be rectified

We were disappointed to see the @CommonsHealth evidence session on the prevention of alcohol harm only receiving evidence from organisations funded by the alcohol industry this week. Here’s our response:

Great to attend @AlcoholChangeUK's @dryjanuary & zero alc tasting event in Portcullis House. Thanks to @Christian4BuryS for highlighting how it's been over a decade since we've had an alcohol strategy, which is urgently needed as we're seeing record high deaths from alcohol.
