I joined Larysa Harapyn at the @financialpost to discuss Chinese EVs and why keeping them out of the Canadian market is critical to our economic security. The federal government was right to impose and maintain a surtax on Chinese EVs. Watch here: https://t.co/IsrXzEaObh

There is no splitting the future of auto parts manufacturing in Canada from auto assembly. More than 50% the parts made in Canada go into Canadian-based auto assembly. If Canadian assembly goes away, so does the business case for Canadian parts. It is very simple.

Goldy Hyder and the Business Council are clearly ok to bend a knee (or both knees) to Donald Trump, but this union certainly is not. Bending to the will of the U.S. President is not how we save our country in this moment of existential crisis. 1/ https://t.co/SF8Ufl7cfP

U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly said that he wants to take auto manufacturing out of Canada and bring it back to the United States.

"Most of us have a standard of behaviour for a president we still cling to out of comfort. I'm not sure what good it does us to pretend it exists anymore." - Flavio Volpe, head of @APMACanada, following Trump's late night post. https://t.co/uiA4DdCeKq

“We can’t control the trade policy of the United States,” Prime Minister Mark Carney told reporters, before departing for Asia Friday.

We need to work together for new product in the plant or its fate will be sealed. It’s difficult to see how another program will be added to a great plant with 35 years of operating excellence if the path to market it’s blocked by a tariff wall. The only medicine is certainty.

In normal times, OEMs will simply fix their product mistakes w/in the plants they operate. However, w/ massive uncertainty in tariff talks, instead of assigning a new product here, they’re choosing to simply give it up. The urgency of 🇨🇦🇺🇸negotiating action can’t be overstated.

Hundreds of millions of dollars in Canadian parts suppliers’ investments have been casually kicked aside without notice by this cowardly decision by Stellantis. 10,000 or so workers at these Canadian supplier plants are relying on Brampton to get a new product. No easy way out.

Great to talk to @CTVNews on why it’s important to negotiate Canadian positions as Team Canada. https://t.co/m09OqajDso

This is how you represent a part* of 🇨🇦 while working for all* of 🇨🇦. Trying to get ahead while selling out your neighbour is how the other side wins a trade war. This much I know. Thanks @ColinDMello and @globalnews for pushing tough questions to me & others.

Let’s not dismiss deep Canada China trade issues so quickly. The actual analogy is that @fordnation isn’t demanding the PM abandon QC dairy farmers bc of US tariffs on ON cars/steel. @ABDanielleSmith isn’t throwing BC lumber to wolves bc of US tariffs on oil. It’s Team CANADA.
@FlavioVolpe1 @WabKinew China didn't start this trade war. Canada started it by putting prohibitively high tariffs on Chinese cars to protect your industry from competition. Removing those tariffs isn't caving, it's recognizing the fact that our actions have had disastrous consequences for our farmers.

Reckless to even suggest this. Caving to China puts the entire Canadian economy at risk, not just the auto sector. We must remain aligned with the US, our largest trade and investment partner, on China.
Minister Anand is in China over the next few days; This is a clear signal of how Ottawa can act this week; It’s time for Ottawa to get this deal done on behalf of 200K Canadian workers.

Truly disappointed that @WabKinew is also playing 🇨🇦 sectors off each other. Caving to those who are threatening 🇨🇦s economy is the opposite of 🇨🇦 leadership. When the chips are down, 🇨🇦 auto has always said no special carve outs at the cost of others. https://t.co/OhldiIwK6x
Tariffs on EVs shouldn’t cost our farmers their livelihoods. Time for trade that works for the Prairies - and for all Canadians. 🇨🇦

No one is confused @PremierScottMoe anymore. He should try playing for Team 🇨🇦 for once. Good teammates play for the name on the front of the jersey. When we could have pushed for special treatment, we said we wouldn’t leave other 🇨🇦s behind. Receipts: https://t.co/OhldiIwK6x

As PMMC heads to DC to meet POTUS, what I’m hoping for is different than what I’m anticipating. This is a working session, I’m not seeing a lot of movement in Washington on the issues that matter to Canadians interests in meetings & conversations I’ve had there. /1

Last week, at our sponsor reception, we got to thank our amazing sponsors for making Canada’s Automotive Summit possible. The Summit brought together top industry leaders to tackle tariffs, trade & the future of EVs in Canada all on one platform.

Chrystia Freeland was our QB in a NAFTA renegotiation with a hostile Trump 1.0. She was central to 🇨🇦s successful management of the pandemic crisis. She galvanized a global alliance for Ukraine’s dogged defence vs Russia’s attack. A prodigious 🇨🇦, she’s earned our high praise.
