As I am in my final days with the BBC World Service, where I served as the editor of The Great Lakes Service, one of the bloodiest regions in Africa, for 17 years, I am delighted that in 2015 I was named as one of the 10 role model journalists in Africa.

RIP Ali Hassan Mwinyi. He will be remembered for his efforts in getting a solution for the Rwandan crisis and the Great Lakes region. Sadly, his ideas were ignored by hard-headed tribalistic leaders. In the picture, he was in Kigali when I worked for Radio Rwanda.

I think you are confusing Mai Mai with Wazalendo. Mai Mai rebel groups were formed to protect their respective tribes and have now joined into Wazalendo to fight their common enemy: M23. It is an open secret that some of the Mai Mai groups were the proxies of Rwanda.

Wazalendo is a Swahili word meaning patriot, not native. In singular is Mzalendo in plural is Wazalendo. It is commonly used in Swahili speaking countries
