One of my favourite parts of beings self employed as a person with ADHD is that my clients hire ME, as a person, and that allows me to dictate to them how I work best, and they generally respect that. Being an employee always felt like being a cog trying to fit into a machine

As a freelance designer with ADHD, I always make sure to ask my clients what their top priorities are, because prioritisation is very difficult with ADHD. My clients: We trust you, do what you think is best. Like.... thank you? But also, please no.

My theory as to why is because neurotypical people see us making all these inexplicable little mistakes all the time, so they think βthereβs no way someone with ADHD could be a perfectionistβ

One time I did a poll on here where I asked ADHDers if they were a perfectionist or not, and it was like 99% yes, and I think about that a lot. I donβt feel like perfectionism gets talked about in relation to ADHD.

This is so important for anyone with ADHD who wants to not spend a large majority of each day searching for things.
My favorite ADHD hack: buy or make 5 of everything important, and put it in every important place! A phone charger for each room, keys for every bag, 300,000 pens, reading glasses in every desk, and βjunkβ drawer! XO, Dr. Jen

Also have: πperfume to spritz myself with πfidget toys to touch πa little windup music box mechanism to listen too π postcards from some of my favourite artists to look at Possibilities are endless, but stuff that requires zero effort to use is best!

One of my favourite ADHD hacks is having a sensory toolkit of things that help you get out of your head and into your body when youβre spiraling into racing thoughts or paralysed. Sour candy is one of the things in mine!
Why does sour candy help with so much? Intrusive thoughts? Sour candy. Panic attack? Sour candy. Depressive episode? Sour candy

ADHD people, if youβre living a sedentary life, what stops you from getting enough activity? Exercise has so been the key to managing my ADHD symptoms, I want to figure out how to get more people moving.

(Which can be pretty traumatic for ADHD folk who grew up hearing that over and over, but never knew why they couldnβt βjust do itβ.)

Donβt get me wrong, I absolutely think therapy has helped me (finding the right therapist is key), but yeah, that feeling of being told βyouβre so self aware, why donβt you just act on that thought?β Is kind of like being told by a teacher again βsmart but lacks motivationβ

I think this is why I found working with an ADHD coach so much more effective in terms of actually changing my life for the better than any of my therapists. When youβre neurodivergent, you often know what you need to do, you just canβt make your brain or body do it.
btw the reason i stopped going to therapy is because after all those years, it got to the point where every session was just the therapists praising me for saying all the right things. zero new information, ever, no matter how many times i tried going to a different practitioner.

I think I like having a cat so much because, as someone with ADHD, it's really nice not to be the most chaotic member of household for once.

It's 25 degrees in the UK, and the ADHD urge to abandon all my client work and go jump in the sea in almost too strong to bear. π
