ACOSS agrees. Interest rates that remain too high for too long are pushing more people into financial stress. There are already 50,000 more people unemployed since the start of the year. Without immediate rate cuts, we will only see that number grow.

“Cutting rates again isn’t without its risks, but the risks of keeping them too high appear more damaging right now.” – @CallamPickering, Senior Economist at @IndeedAU.

Underlying inflation remains well within the RBA’s target range. There is no justification for maintaining interest rates at punishingly high levels. Interest rate cuts alone won’t resolve the ongoing living standards crisis.

There are now two people unemployed for every job vacancy - the highest ratio since 2021. Rising unemployment means more people on brutally low-income support payments, and more people trapped in a failing employment services system: https://t.co/VJRRfNkEjo

NARO and Shelter call for robust Federal oversight of the Better Deal for Renters reforms, incentives for states & territories to implement the reforms and NARO’s National Nine principles, and Federal funding for NARO to give expert advice and ensure renters’ voices are heard.

In the face of falling employment and economic uncertainty, the @RBAInfo must continue to reduce interest rates at its next meeting to support employment growth and those doing it toughest. And government must #RaisetheRate to support people without paid work.

Figures released today: Unemployment has risen by 140,000 people since 2022 - 50,000 of that coming in 2025. That's more people living on #JobSeeker payment of just $400 a week, struggling to pay the bills and put food on the table.

If the gov. is serious about addressing #MentalHealth impacts and reducing harm, raising income support and removing damaging policies like the TCF are essential. If you or somebody you know is having a hard time, here are some services that could help:

People relying on inadequate income support experience high rates of poor mental health, many face harmful policies like the Targeted Compliance Framework. Suicide rates among people receiving JobSeeker exceed those of people receiving other payments and the broader population.

The federal government's $475 million compensation to Robodebt victims may do little to alleviate the "pain and anguish" for those who lost loved ones over the scandal.

We urge the Federal Government to implement all 57 recommendations from the Robodebt Royal Commission, including reinstating the statute of limitations on debt recovery and its recommendation to amend cabinet confidentiality provisions in the Freedom of Information Act.

Ten years on and no one responsible for the unlawful scheme has been held accountable. The National Anti-Corruption Commission is still investigating six individuals referred by the Robodebt Royal Commission. Individuals affected by the scheme and their families deserve better.
