I can only imagine what Gabourey Sidibe went through after filming this movie. The fatphobia and colorism people RAN with out of it…..and the movie came out in 2009 (media in the 2000s was heavily anti-fat)
Did a project on this in school. Cis Black men in the diaspora through the 1960s promoting social justice through their music while engaging in misogynoiristic violence (Bob Marley, Fela Kuti, James Brown)
Bob Marley got 11 kids including 8 kids out of wedlock, he was ran through.
He also was abusing Rita, his wife, (domestic violence + sexual assault) and neglecting his kids. While singing « woman no cry » a song about respecting women. A whole fraud.
Organized famine is one of the most evil tactics to enforce ethnic cleansing. Closing in on populations to deny access to foods domestically + globally also reminds me of the Biafran genocide, only 54 years back.
This is also the third organized famine against Tigray.
The way y’all speak about drug users….. I need “crackhead,” “junkie,” and any term that condemns drug users to disappear.
Even the way y’all refer to someone as an addict is plainly horrible.
People never called her by her name, just “Precious” and then everything would unfold from there. It was used as a fatphobic insult through many elementary school years and even in recent years people questioned how she could be married and loved in her size.
But this is also where I talk about people’s implicit biases and true feelings about fat people really LEAP 😭💀 I find so much of it insincere because y’all who are thin won’t even feel inclined to jump in and correct it
I can’t even accept people being upset about Beyoncé’s commitment to capitalism through genocide when that very frustration from Africans meant nothing in 2020 with “Black is King.”
This should be a part of the conversation when discussing the role of antiblackness globally.
Thinness is gender-affirming to most of society so fatness leaves you prone to being ungendered almost inherently, and closes the gap between transphobia and fatphobia
It will never be lost on me that light skinned Black people are given more space to be seen as radical compared to their dark skinned counterparts. Even more sad that these very figures out on pedestals are actually invested in colorism and misogynoir.
The Hate U Give is a perfect example of this. Amandla Stenberg being cast as Starr took so much away from the message behind the movie of Starr assimilating into white society.
You are not sitting here telling me someone looking like Amandla can prove that in film.
If you’re too tired (or intoxicated) to drive, please call a taxi/uber or fine any way to not drive. Please. My childhood friend just passed at 19 trucking on the highway because of this. I don’t care if you’ve never had an accident or you drive like it all the time. Stop now.
The thing about students that attend PWIs is that y’all really say anything. The right verbiage presented eloquently, inflections in your voice, hand motions, with a dash of “cognizant” or “intersectional,” will have anyone bending over like you preaching fact.
I said my gift to y’all today was transparency so here it is. Through a pandemic I’m happy to say I had my best semester, but it wasn’t no straight A’s or nothing 😂😂😂and we DEF not on 4.0 shit. But we as students are doing our best even if it’s not perfect 🙌🏽🙌🏽
Nah because how many Harvard people say they wanna help the world just to ghost people stuck on psets 😭😭😭😭😭y’all really suck ass at interpersonal relationships but think you can offer the world so much
It’s so hard identifying neurodivergence in students of color (especially Black students) who have their behavior weaponized against them by white teachers or admin without the space for empathy and consideration white students always receive.
My younger sister (17 at the time) made a TikTok about this saying white supremacy was upheld through putting thinner noses on a pedestal for beauty in trends, and they doxxed her and got her account shut down
I’m really confused why y’all acting like Black folks w bigger & wider noses/larger features in general aren’t treated differently than Black folks w smaller & longer noses/smaller features like oh I thought we were going to be serious for once but we aren’t! Let’s wrap it up!!!
This just shattered my heart into pieces. I truly hope anyone involved in threatening land that her family has held for generations burns in the deepest part of hell.
And fuck Tyler Perry for tryna build her a new house instead of fighting to keep her home.
RIP to Ms. Josephine Wright. She was the Hilton Head, SC native who was fighting against a real estate developer trying to take her home that has been in the family since the Civil War. Follow
@SankofaTravelHr
All I have to say is, Africans said a lot of this shit from 2020 about “Black is King” and got ignored 🤧NOW y’all know that her commitment to capitalism has always existed
Children are truly an oppressed class. The intersect between ageism and ableism is so strong, on top of the fact that all forms of marginalization can intersect with children.
This is the part that upsets people, because if pretty much all nonblack entities built caste systems around antiblackness, them not seeing you as Black…..says a lot lol
I’m so glad more people are recognizing the failure in letting cis women dominate gender analysis, because I’ve gaslit myself for years thinking only cis men are to blame for recent trauma I had to work through when this very issue explains the failure of many relationships.
But more than this, I can’t imagine in the global history of several slave trades and colonialism saying that genocide is not your concern as a Black person. Regardless of the population impacted.
Lately? Lmfaooo there is just a new wave of language to add is all. We go from slim thick to summer bodies to clean aesthetic and 80 million terms and statements that model fatphobia but it’s taken the obvious to bring concern.
Imma just say it, as of recently “diaspora wars” has been used a lotttttt in downplaying xenophobia against Africans. That shit has become a dogwhistle more and more one-sidedly.
This is not true at all. Like I get the “diaspora” wars are a thing on this app and hilarious at times, but it’s a known fact that those European immigrants that came over here in the late 1800s brought rats and roaches with them in the cargo of those ships…
You’re treating “non-binary” like a third gender when gender diversity (and non-binaryhood) exists within masculinity and femininity. We see the pipeline to anti-trans masculinity and bioessentialism when gender diversity isn’t considered for QTGNC men.
Some African (and Black) parents don’t like to admit that they’re scared of their children not needing/depending on them anymore, to the point of letting them remain underdeveloped and restricted in the name of keeping the control they fear will disappear come adulthood.
“I care about mental health but I will shame drug users who are self medicating (out of poverty many times)”
“I care about homelessness, but people who count on drugs to feel number to hunger, bad weather, and etc shouldn’t waste the money I give them”
The disingenuous think-pieces and ways to explain away Beyoncé’s behavior, on top of the countless displays of afro/xenophobia and violent ignorance from the start of the pandemic, reaffirmed my view on what Africans are considered to the world — nothing.
Because genocides and ethnic cleansing still occur through the countries just now garnering your concern, but what does it say to only value lived experience when it’s not that of Africans? To value nuance when it’s to discredit African plight?
This also very much can slide into eugenics when we consider who is/isn’t worth saving from oppression based on desirability. And wrongfully ascribe individual blame and moral failure to certain traits
Ppl of all shapes, sizes, and disability are on the front lines across the global south in warfare. They don't have wash board abs or fit any gym aesthetic or metric of desirability yall are chasing. According to yall, they would be "out of shape" and therefore disposable.
Which is why we need to be honest and talk about fatphobia ungendering people AND how people dishonestly fetishize us in the name of presenting as people who have the range to understand the harmful perceptions of fat bodies sexually.
It’s so funny getting the reputation of the person who “ruins fun for people” because of my stance on celebrities or social trends and the politics around them.
Being someone that doesn’t forego my ethics for individual pleasure is being negative and toxic 🙃
Yeah this was about me coming out 😭😭happened a few days before I tweeted this but things are progressively getting better now and they’re accepting it 🤧🙌🏾we thank God
Right now I’m challenging my family in the greatest way possible with taking ownership of my life and boy oh boy is it still so hard even going into my third year of being a college student
They was doing paper bag tests for Black churches 🙃nobody darker than the doors could enter.
And imagine this during civil rights when churches and liberation theology were core to Black radicalism
@SJW_Hoe
Right….like she very much said “I don’t care if you’re an adult, don’t talk to me like that” and people wanted to jump over the context to criminalize her. Justifying abuse and suffering she might (still) be experiencing
@thirdking0208
I just hate the way she couldn’t stand in the fire when rightfully held to it. This is where housewives like Kenya and even Kyle outshine her.
Every 2 business days someone says they can’t date a weed smoker like anyone asked, then the convos devolve into ableism and victim-blaming from all standpoints regarding drug users.
I didn't know this had to be said, but:
Framing the mass death and displacement of millions of Black people as a win for
#climate
change is dehumanizing and racist.
@thirdking0208
But let’s not forget that when Quad was abused and cheated on, they were only concerned about her being on a couple’s trip when single, AND blamed her for it after. Many opportunities she takes to open up aren’t regarded seriously, then she gets hate for matching energy.
I wanna know how there’s actual Black people/oppressed people at the bottom fighting for visibility and have been performing tireless labor and organizing for years while people like
@ziadahmed
and
@nadyaokamoto
receive undeserved acclaim and.....money.
This discourse coming up right when I reported my supervisor for telling me I’m male presenting and shouldn’t take up more space now that my pronouns are only they/them
It kills me remembering that I graduated with her 😭between her aversion to Black spaces while reaping benefits by the end of college, to hearing now of her “neutral” stance around Palestinian genocide.
As someone who is bipolar and smokes:
Weed is not making symptoms develop, it makes the symptoms more apparent. People are predisposed to these illnesses and it becomes very dangerous to say weed is responsible when they alleviate negative symptoms they experience.
Aaron Bushnell didn't light himself on fire to try and move those in power to do the right thing. He did it for all of us, so we would be forced by the magnitude of his sacrifice to tear down the system that led him to his actions. It's on all of us to act now.
It’s also hard working with young folks and seeing them conditioned into becoming these very people. Promoting the rhetoric of girls being fast, thots, slides, bops, or “knowing better” that takes away from addressing predatory behavior they’re already vulnerable to.
Calling out predatory age gap dynamics is always hard because there’s so many aggressive people who guard their abilities to pray on young folks. Like it’s so sick how quick they come to say these young folks are “grown”
This really was an unfortunate wake up call that the plight of continental Africans is of little concern to Black people through the rest of the diaspora.
Between this and Black is King, it frustrates me what people are willing to ignore in the name of representation.
So many people at Harvard have such an individualistic and elitist mindset surrounding academics and I’m sick. Even amidst a global pandemic y’all lack basic empathy and understanding. It’s whatever y’all can do for a grade but how about a re-evaluation of yourself.
Exactly, the moment I studied drugs fr in college and took a step back, seeing how stigmas are deeply attached to race and class surrounding drugs made me erase any negative concept of addiction, and the idea of good/bad drugs.
Gaslighting 101: People will use your reaction to situations as validation for negative behavior they exhibited and/or were never going to change, and will even spin it into you being a perpetrator against other people. You are not wrong for reacting to your pain/hurt.
I SAID THIS AT A CONFERENCE FOR MY JOB OMG OMG. Centered around engaging men and boys but only phrasing it as the value of having men there.
The “boys (only) need boys” shit really has got to go. Wrong in 100000 ways.
