#OTD 1985 Juanita Craft passed away. She was appointed Dallas, TX NAACP membership chairman in 1942 and in 1946 was promoted to Texas NAACP field organizer. In 1944, Mrs. Craft became the first black woman in Dallas County to vote.

#OTD 1874, Virginia Randolph was born. She was an educator, social worker, and humanitarian. She was known as the Booker T. Washington of vocational training. Randolph was appointed the first Jeans Supervising Industrial Teacher in 1908.

SAY HER NAME: #OTD 1965 Atty Alberta Jones body was found floating in the Ohio River near Fontaine Ferry Park, in Louisville, KY. Jones, an attorney, whose private clients included Muhammad Ali, was the first female prosecutor in Louisville, KY. Her death remains unsolved.

#OTD 1994 Dr. Calvin Kiah passed away. He was a professor who led Savannah State College’s education department. Dr. Kiah and his wife Virginia were pioneers in the black cultural and museum movement and created the first African American-founded museum in Savannah.

#OTD 2007 Oliver Hill passed away. Hill was earn a civil rights activist and attorney who fought for equal justice and overturned racial segregation in US public schools.

#OTD 1994 actor and comedian, Corwin Hawkins passed away. He is best remembered for playing the role of 'Wayman' in the 1994 film, "A Low Down Dirty Shame." He died before the movie was released.

#OTD 1972 Mose "Preacher" Wright, Emmett Till's uncle, passed away. Wright testified and pointed in court that JW Milam and Roy Bryant kidnapped Emmett Till on the night of August 28. Wright moved to Chicago after the trial.

#OTD 2001 Dr. Eileen El-Dorado Johnson passed away. Johnson was a pioneering physician and psychiatrist from North Carolina. Johnson received her medical training in Switzerland before interning at Harlem Hospital Center in New York.

#OTD 1974 Joseph A. DeLaine passed away. He was a minister and school principal who organized Black parents in Summerton, SC, to petition the school board for a bus for black students, who had to walk up to 10 miles through corn and cotton fields to attend a segregated school.

#OTD 2012 Bertram Brunson passed away. In 1991, age 21, Brunson was pulled over of suspicion of DUI. He was hog-tied by the police that left him in a vegetative state for 21 years. There is now a law that prevents police from hog tying suspects. SAY HIS NAME.

#OTD 1967 Claude Barnett passed away. In 1919, he founded the associated Negro Press (ANP). By 1935, the ANP was serving over 200 subscribers across the country and after WW II its membership grew to include more than 100 African American newspapers.

#OTD 1935 Mable Lewis Imes passed away. She was an original member of the Fisk Jubilee Singers. Imes joined the Jubilee Singers in 1872 after auditioning while they were on their tour in the American Northern states. She retired in 1880.

#OTD 2014 Dr. Jewel L. Prestage passed away. Prestage was the first Black woman to earn a Ph.D from a department of political science at an American university. Prestage served as chair of Southern University's Political Science Department for 18 years.
