Today is Launch Day 🚀
Introducing OldOS — iOS 4 beautifully rebuilt in SwiftUI.
* 🎨 Designed to be as close to pixel-perfect as possible.
*📱 Fully functional, perhaps even usable as a second OS.
* 🗺️ Fully open source for all to learn, modify, and build on.
The OldOS CoverFlow update is here 🚀
Super excited about this one…one is my top “I can’t believe they got rid of this” features. Get ready to flip through your music like it’s 2010!
I'm super excited about this one...started a new experiment to rebuild iTunes 10 in SwiftUI. The difference with this is I'm treating it as a build-in public where anyone can follow the progress! Ofc the end goal is to make it fully functional.
The OldOS Youtube update is officially here 🚀
It's taken a ton of work, and has had several delays, but I'm ecstatic everyone now has access to it. It really transports you back to 2011!
The next OldOS update, coming this weekend will bring back multitasking. It will also introduce a special app available for download. Later this week, there will be another update enabling YouTube. This has been a heck of a lot of work, so I hope y’all enjoy 😁
OldOS has officially passed 100,000 users 🎉! This started off as a small project to keep me entertained and has since surpassed each and every one of my wildest expectations. I am so incredibly thankful and grateful for everyone who has helped build such an incredible community.
After a few days work, I was able to decrypt the iPod Classic's OS imagery (dated 2008). Afaik, this hasn't been done yet...and as a result, all these great assets have been lost to time. Here are some of my favorites and a link to access them all.
Next OldOS update will let you set a custom wallpaper...so you can merge iOS 4 and iOS 15, see your pet, look at NYC, or set whatever else your heart desires.
How cool is this! Using peertalk we can have OldOS communicate with the iTunes Experiment…meaning you can relive the days of syncing your iPhone with iTunes.
It amazes me that 16 years later, the core use-cases for an iPhone are near exactly the same as when it was announced. This is why its genius. It hasn't needed to reinvent itself, its merely needed to adapt and broaden these use-cases.
With a little bit of user-agent/header trickery, we can get JailbreakMe loading on OldOS. Probably needs a good amount of cleaning up in the CSS department, and it doesn't actually do anything, but boy is it nostalgic.
The biggest update to OldOS yet is now available 🚀.
-📱Introducing one of the defining features of iOS 4, multitasking.
And oh yeah, it only took me a month, but OldOS finally has an official Twitter,
@old_os
.
Tried another little experiment to recreate the Apple TV 1st Gen home-screen in SwiftUI, and I've gotta say I love this skeuomorphic goodness on the iPad. Source code below.
So with all the debate going around with the new Safari in Monterey, I decided to try a little experiment and recreate Snow Leopard's version of Safari in SwiftUI. Gotta say, It’s so much fun to use! You can download it at .
The next OldOS update is live! It includes two of the most requested features:
* 🌇 Custom wallpapers.
* 🔋 The extremely nostalgic battery charging lock-screen.
P.S. — the next update will include a brand new app. Here's a hint as to what it might be: 📺.
Deca5 - The A5 Tool is available for download now 🚀.
• GUI tool built entirely on Swift, SwiftUI, and C.
• Downgrade any A5 device.
• Supports Restoring and Booting.
• Opensource.
Super excited to announce that Mail is here 🚀
This is a full-blown email app inside of OldOS:
• View, manage, and modify inbox and mailboxes
• Read and send emails
• And more
Quick OldOS status update. The next release of OldOS will be the biggest update to it yet! There's still a good amount of work left to do, and I'm sorry that its taking a while, but hang tight, know I'm working on it, and want to ship it as soon as its done.
1) Patch iBSS/iBEC with my fork of iBoot32Patcher
2) Patch Kernel with my fork of CBPatcher
3) Decrypt other boot files
4) Boot Ramdisk -> patch rw in fstab -> patch springboard.plist -> untar Cydia
5) Boot with patched components
6) Enjoy Jailbreak
Coming to a tool near you
While working on a project I ended up extracting all of iTunes 10's image assets. What I found was a gold mine of original device imagery. Not sure if this would help anyone, but I've made them available for download...just look at how amazing these are!
Here's why I think SwiftUI is the language of the future: it enables developers to be designers and designers to be developers. Experiments in tools like Figma can readily become apps, and simple code can instantly become beautiful design.
Trying out a workflow experiment:
- You move to different spaces in real life when you want to be productive, why not do the same with your OS?
- Any tasks where productivity is crucial and distractions should be minimized takes place on a legacy OS
- The rest on normal OS
I'm so excited to officially announce what is the next evolution of OldOS — The OldOS Project. Its mission is simple: to preserve works of the past with nostalgia experiments. You can learn more at .
I really don’t like Safari in iOS 15 Beta 4, and I’m not game to use Chrome….might just make a dedicated app out of Safari in OldOS, would anyone want it if I did?
Was watching
@zollotech
's most recent video and saw this! Can't even begin to say how shocked/honored I am to see OldOS in the video. Thank you so much, Aaron.
So we hit the 10k users cap on TestFlight...which is insane. Of course, I want everyone to be able to use the app, so first step will be to get an IPA up on the Github. After that, maybe we'll do some kind of cycling? Not sure, would love to hear your ideas...
Super excited for all the cool things coming to OldOS. Here’s the release roadmap for the next ~month:
1. CoverFlow
2. Website bookmarks on HS
3. A new app
4. Working folders
Crazy how with SwiftUI so many features can be built so quickly.
Was thinking it’d be cool if developers could some how build retro versions of their apps for OldOS that could be downloaded from the App Store (in OldOS) or smthn. Would there be any interest?
Look what just came! What an amazing piece of work from
@flarup
and team…not only is this an incredible collection of work from some of the most talented people, but it truly is a work of art.
👀👀Will be releasing within the next few days a full A5 tethered downgrade tool with support for:
• Creating downgrade IPSWs
• Installing Switchboard/Dev Firmwares
• Booting
• Jailbreaking (limited to some versions in the beginning)
Stay tuned...
