Alas, my fears were confirmed by the PM’s announcement that Canada will recognize Palestinian statehood subject to conditions. I stand by my comments that this is a condescending, patronizing, colonial action by a country that prides itself on never having been a colonial power.
I had just finished interviewing 🇨🇦Senator @yuenpauwoo when PM @MarkJCarney announced the Canadian government’s decision to recognize the state of Palestine.

Yesterday’s announcement from @AnitaAnandMP about funding to prepare for statehood implies that we get to decide when Palestinians are deserving of such. @CanadaFP at its cynical and posturing worst — in the midst of a genocide.
It’s hard for Canada to credibly advocate for a 2 State Solution when we refuse to recognize one of those States. It’s past time for Canadian recognition of the State of Palestine.

I’m honored to join 25 senators in signing this statement but how I wish it was unnecessary. While 🇨🇦 stance has shifted recently, we have not taken meaningful action to stop Israel’s genocide in Gaza. If anything, our belated response reeks of cynicism & posturing @AnitaAnandMP.
