Yesterday, I delivered my statement in the Senate Chamber in Michif, the language of the Metis Nation. I hope this historic occasion will show Michif children across the Homeland that there is a place for them in every decision-making space, even the Senate of Canada.

It is always great to connect with my friend Judge Brass to hear about the important work she is doing. Having my two daughters, who are both Indigenous lawyers as well, join us made the meeting even more of a joy! #SenCA

Now almost a decade after we met for the first time, just last week while in Saskatchewan, I was thrilled to have the chance to see Katy, and her beautiful and healthy baby girl, who she named Sage, meaning good medicine.

“After the birth of her fourth child, Katy Bear says she was coerced into being sterilized with a tubal ligation — she was 21. After years of fighting to regain control of her body, Bear has also become an advocate for other Indigenous people who were forcibly sterilized.”.

Years ago, I met Katy Bear late one night while checking into a hotel in Saskatchewan. From that moment, I knew she was a fighter. I am proud to stand with her, and all survivors as we work to stop this horrific practice once and for all. via @CBCNews

While in Saskatchewan I had the chance to meet with my long time friend and colleague, Arnold Blackstar. I was honoured that he gifted me a beautiful beaded medallion with the logo of his band, Moosomin First Nation. I will wear it with pride in the Senate Chamber.
