My new research paper examines Somalia’s post-HIPC reforms and the clash between global AML/CFT standards and local remittance systems. 📎 A critical read on risk, regulation & resilience. 🔗 https://t.co/dwPnh5nVQv #Somalia #Remittances #HIPC #FinancialRegulation #AML #CFT

This is a very interesting paper on the financial regulation reforms and their implications in Somalia. Very few texts exist in this area, and this is indeed a major contribution. Congratulations to @musegeellejr

I organised and chaired the panel ‘Somali Cosmopolitanism: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow’—a rich session on Soomaaliniimo, identity, and belonging. Grateful to all who contributed and made it such a meaningful space.

Just back from a great week in Prague for the European Conference on African Studies (#ECAS). The panels were energising, the conversations generous, and it was a real pleasure to engage across disciplines and geographies.

Mi Gente- Daedalus journal asked for an essay looking at the uses & misuses of the concept of race in African & Middle Eastern Studies. I obliged with this 12,000-word r̶a̶n̶t̶ meditation: “Exporting Race: Norms, Categories & “The All-American Skin Game”

The week was filled with great conversations and a deep sense of solidarity among brilliant African academics. Leaving Accra inspired by the scholars, the stories, and the urgent reminder of the global impact of African women in shaping regional and transnational dynamics!

My talk focused on the pioneering diplomat Cissé. In particular, I shared some insights on Cissé's Pan-African advocacy at the UN, her steadfast push for sanctions against white minority regimes, and the broader significance of her work for international decolonisation efforts.

There’s rightly a lot of focus on Somalia’s civil war, but I took a step back to write this essay for @newlinesmag exploring the story(ies) of how we got here. I drew on archival research, memoirs, and other material I’ve read over the years, so do have a read

NEW: In the 1960s Somalia was a democratic pacesetter in Africa, and by the 1990s it was a byword for chaos and destruction. @FaisalAHAli traces the factors from independence onward that contributed to the country’s decline, for @newlinesmag. https://t.co/VQDuljk1Jj
