Excited to receive an NSF CAREER award, feeling really lucky!! This grant will support our lab's work on human-AI collaborative techniques to create intelligent tutors, and methods to help experts express expertise with simulated students.

Evaluation with medical trainees showed that eXplainMR’s explanations improved trainees’ understanding of ultrasound procedures and reduced their post-test performance time (without assistance), compared to a baseline system that provided only shadow- and arrow-based guidance.

Third, learners need feedback to improve. In contrast with traditional MR-based systems that offer arrow and shadow-based guidance, eXplainMR generates real-time textual and visual explanations based on the indexed 3D model.

Second, tutoring systems require repeated practice on each skill element. eXplainMR generates practice opportunities based on subgoals, each focusing on one degree of freedom of the probe. With a lightweight expert model (the subgoals), eXplainMR can generate meaningful practice.

eXplainMR addresses key challenges in building physical task tutoring systems compared to cognitive tutors. First, it requires a computational understanding of the physical space to provide feedback. eXplainMR achieves this by indexing anatomical structures in a 3D heart model.
