I know this has been shared elsewhere already but this is the moment I started crying during all this. My condolences to the families and friends and salutes to the reporters who made it to the seen and stayed up late last night
The Senate passes a bill package that would ban those convicted of a Domestic Violence-related misdemeanor from having a gun for 8 years after they complete their sentence.
11 bills have been filed in the Michigan Senate since this morning. They deal with safe firearm storage, background checks and red flag policies.
Democrats have been promising gun legislation all week and invited Republican co-sponsorship during speeches earlier today
I'm not gonna cry. I'mnot gonna cry. I'mnotgonna cry. I'mnotgonnacry. Imnahgoncry. It's been an amazing ride jumping into a new state with no friends and finding family I love so much here. Despite working with words, I'm speechless for how proud I am to have been a Kentuckian
We have some bittersweet news to share with our audience.
Our Morning Edition host, Colin Jackson, is taking his talents back up north, and will become Statehouse Reporter for the Michigan Public Radio Network in Lansing. (thread)
Update: Police said they'd send someone out. Thank you for all the suggestions and concern!
Let this be a warning to other journos who think they can just work off a mobile hotspot in their cars
The House just passed a bill to close a marital rape loophole preventing prosecution of someone for sexual assaulting their spouse solely because of the spouse's mental incapacitation.
After living in the area 26 years, I often say Lansing isn't a great city. Or sometimes even a good one. But it definitely doesn't suck as hard as everyone from outside of it makes it sound.
Besides our regional meme game is unparalleled
Your 2023-2024 Michigan legislative leadership team:
Senate Majority Leader: Winnie Brinks
Senate Republican Leader: Aric Nesbitt
House Speaker: Joe Tate
House Minority Leader: Matt Hall
I heard a lot of celebrating and fears today about the direction of the MI GOP.
One thing outside of all that I didn't really hear brought up is that for the first time in Michigan history, Black women will be in charge of both major parties.
Has this happened in other states?
Some numbers I found interesting for talks on whether Michigan lawmakers adjourned "early" this year.
This year, Gov. Whitmer signed 198 bills into law so far.
In 2021, she signed 168
In 2019, she signed 178
In 2017, Fmr. Gov. Rick Snyder signed 267
In 2015, he signed 269
Finally saw Don't Look Up and honestly it's just weird seeing your hometown represented in a film by nothing that looks like your hometown. No pot holes, no MSU yardsigns, not a single beer pong table in someone's yard. At least they got the deer right
Guess who counts as an "expert" now!
Come see me help recap the political year with some really smart people at Lansing Brewing Company this Tuesday at 19:00!

Was just told to leave the area of the Grand Hotel where the MI GOP state committee meeting was happening. Turns out quietly sitting outside the door as people were exiting was "interfering"
Rashida Tlaib just before announcing her victory. She will be congressperson for Michigan's 13th and first ever Muslim female in Congress

The Michigan Senate just passed a bill to allow the state to make regulations that go beyond federal standards. This would effectively end limits on that ability passed in 2018.
At the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) on MSU's campus. The governor and several members of congress expected to speak
Update: the bill passed with one Republican vote.
This was on the Senate schedule for today, but I'm told Republicans managed to adjourn for the day while Democrats were away from the floor.
Some Dems and staff waiting around to see what happens next
The Michigan House Judiciary Committee just reported its safe gun storage bills to the full chamber.
Extreme Risk Protection Order (also known as "red flag") bills are staying behind for more work
Whitmer says every day lawmakers don't spend approx $2B in remaining federal coronavirus comes with an opportunity cost as inflation affects what the state can do with that money
Last year I almost missed my flight coming back from NABJ. This year, my flight missed me. Shout out to some extra time in Atlanta and this BHM Burger King for doing all the work
The Michigan State Capitol Commission just voted 6-0 to largely ban guns and other weapons from the state capitol.
The security procedure was amended before a final vote to exempt CPL-holding lawmakers.
@dwmove
It's the Democrats' tax proposal. It includes pension tax rollbacks, an expansion of the earned income tax credit, $180 tax rebate checks for residents, and possible funding for housing and renewal projects, as well as potentially over $1 billion for development incentives
SB 271 would requires a clean energy standard by 2040. It passed the House this morning by party lines. It'll need the Senate to concur with changes before it can go to the governor
hello and welcome to Lansing,
@xcolinjacksonx
! here is a video about our town and you now have a healthy and normal emotional attachment to a giant giraffe that was on the roof of a gas station that is definitely coming back
Now that the Senate's done, here's where things stand:
SB 6 (Prevailing wage): ☑
Hb 4007 (Prevailing wage): needs House concurrence vote
SB 34 (Right to Work repeal): ☑
HB 4004 (Right to Work repeal): needs House concurrence vote
Update: Secure MI Vote says it will turn in its petition signatures to tighten voter ID requirements in Michigan tomorrow.
It'll be too late to get on the 2022 ballot but lawmakers could pass it into law without the governor's approval if its signatures hold up
Now the Senate votes to move up Michigan's presidential primary election to February.
Republicans shared concerns about how the bill would penalize their party's representation at the Republican National Convention
The Michigan Senate is also taking up HB 4001 right now.
This is a major Democratic priority bill that would roll back taxes on pensions, expand the earned income tax credit, send out tax rebate checks, and set up a funding mechanism for economic incentives.
Day two of House Democrats trying to get their priority tax plan through the Legislature.
After waiting hours yesterday without voting, they seem to be setting up for something today.
For a recap of yesterday:
In the biggest bipartisan vote of the day, the House passes an EITC expansion bill.
