For only the 2nd time ever, Midland, TX (MAF) records a 500mb height of 6000+ meters. Only previous time was 6/29/94. 1st time I can recall five (5) different stations reporting 6000+ meter heights at 50h. Further evidence of the heat dome setting up over NM/AZ/west TX. #txwx

500 mb height of 5980 meters at Midland, TX this AM is a daily max value, and ties for the 3rd highest ever. Center likely near 6000 meters over NM/AZ. No 12z soundings from ABQ/TUS preclude determining this. Either way, record heat likely nxt few days over much of AZ/NM. #nmwx

Fantastic Op-Ed piece here by Jennifer Nagorka in the DMN. The similarities to the Big Thompson Canyon flood in CO in 1976 and Kerrville are eerily similar. There are lessons to learn.

In 1976, a flood killed 144 people in Big Thompson Canyon in Colorado. The similarities to this month’s flood in central Texas are hard to miss.
