As a co-founder of 23andMe, with all the recent news I felt it was time to express my views on the company, after witnessing the downfall of an idea and brand that could have become the world’s leading digital health platform. The idea for 23andMe came to me after years working

Peter Campbell leaves the Sanger Institute at the end of the year to become Quotient's CSO. A mentor and one of my favourite scientists. His foundational, profound and creative contributions to cancer genomics and somatic evolution have truly shaped those fields. [1/7]
Academic co-founder, Peter Campbell, Ph.D., is joining the Quotient team as CSO. We look forward to advancing the first ever #SomaticGenomics platform under his leadership. Read more: https://t.co/UplbpLYsaz

Reliability of bioinformatics tools is often sacrificed at the altar of novelty. Found two intriguing initiatives yesterday that seek to address. Here's the first:
When writing bioinformatics tools, I often need small datasets to test edge cases or invalid file formats, e.g. files that are truncated, unsorted, have extraneous whitespace, etc. I started compiling examples here: https://t.co/YFTuPhKfSm, contributions are welcome!

Is it heretical to suggest that LLMs could improve scientific writing (see my last tweet)?
How many academic papers are written with the help of ChatGPT? To answer this question, we analyzed 14mln PubMed abstracts from 2010 to 2024 and looked for excess words: ** Delving into ChatGPT usage in academic writing through excess vocabulary ** https://t.co/yorlDLjozw 1/11

Learned in latest @virginmedia Cambridge outage: 1. You can tell if widespread locally by speed of mobile data. 2. You can tell if it's regional coz Virgin's service status page won't load. 3. No point popping down the pub like the old days coz card machines won't work!

Fascinating example of ChatGPT limitations.
Friend just sent me this from ChatGTP. Note the phrase 'sex assigned at birth' (which in the maternity world you have to say or get pushed under a bus) is here described as 'problematic' because 'sex is not solely determined by biology'. Snake eating its own tail here methinks.

Working for a well funded, early-stage biotech is great fun. Especially one developing a ground-breaking new genomics platform. We're looking for a computational biologist, based near Cambridge, UK.
