Most employers may not want their team to burn out, but a lot of them definitely want to keep doing the things that lead to their team burning out.

And actually, I think โassume good intentโ serves a third purpose: it gives a pass to people who witness bad behavior. More specifically, it gives them an out: an excuse to not call out malfeasance and to not be an ally. It makes it okay to leave somebody to struggle alone.

aside: the "why aren't there more women in tech?" question should really lead to the "why don't men know the history of tech?" question computers used to be measured in 'kilo-girls', after all the answer is, and continues to be "women are pushed out of tech by men

managers: I honestly wanna know - when someone is performing above their level, why do you tell them โ6 more monthsโ for promo - especially for POCs? did you forget time isnโt a renewable resource? make it make sense

A team that has 100% of its time filled with tasks to ship is a micromanaged team that is going to burn out. To make things worse, it wonโt be able to do the basic maintenance work any system needs. The long-term effects of this will be visible years afterward.

I used a conference talk to launch my career, but now that Iโm taking on more leadership roles, Iโm seeing even more clearly how important it is to communicate effectively and concisely. Still plenty of room for me to improve there ๐
