Most employers may not want their team to burn out, but a lot of them definitely want to keep doing the things that lead to their team burning out.

And actually, I think โ€œassume good intentโ€ serves a third purpose: it gives a pass to people who witness bad behavior. More specifically, it gives them an out: an excuse to not call out malfeasance and to not be an ally. It makes it okay to leave somebody to struggle alone.

aside: the "why aren't there more women in tech?" question should really lead to the "why don't men know the history of tech?" question computers used to be measured in 'kilo-girls', after all the answer is, and continues to be "women are pushed out of tech by men

managers: I honestly wanna know - when someone is performing above their level, why do you tell them โ€œ6 more monthsโ€ for promo - especially for POCs? did you forget time isnโ€™t a renewable resource? make it make sense

If you have a "Senior Front End Dev" who doesn't know what `grid-template-columns` is, I hope you also have an equally paid "Senior Front End Dev" who does, without the expectation they know about the Redux connect() function

A team that has 100% of its time filled with tasks to ship is a micromanaged team that is going to burn out. To make things worse, it wonโ€™t be able to do the basic maintenance work any system needs. The long-term effects of this will be visible years afterward.

Jenn is a lovely human and just one of many not-coding-focused people who make the JS community better ๐Ÿ’•

Component libraries are great, but you still need to know CSS to adapt those systems to your vision, and not adapt your vision to the system. You still need to know how to apply the mortar between the bricks to hold it all together.

This has absolutely been one of the hardest parts about becoming tech lead for my tiny (but fierce!) dev team.

I used a conference talk to launch my career, but now that Iโ€™m taking on more leadership roles, Iโ€™m seeing even more clearly how important it is to communicate effectively and concisely. Still plenty of room for me to improve there ๐Ÿ˜…

Reminder that you can also donate *directly* to the scholarship fund if buying a diversity ticket is out of reach. Iโ€™m 100% confident that even the smallest of donations will make a big difference โค๏ธ

CSS is hard because you have zero people trained in CSS on your team, a handful at best in your org, and not enough of them in the industry. So you're scrambling to get a semblance of productivity and stability through extra tools; like putting extra wheels on a bicycle.
