and that's my final excessively long design thread done! sorry to everyone these annoyed, and to everyone who wasn't bothered by them, i hope you enjoyed seeing my design process :) i actually have more to say on all of these year 3 designs, but i'll spare you all lmao

i was also eager to allow him to have a more casual look this time around, allowing him to fit in more with his teammates, and reflect some character growth. the coat is actually something i brought back from an abandoned year 2 concept, and i'm glad i made it work better here.

finally, we have cobalt, who was the easiest to approach from the point of having a clear aesthetic for his previous two designs, but still took a while to nail down, because i struggled with making his armor look different enough.

i have to offer a huge shoutout to @sailorb00 for their assistance with her design, as well as to @chamochomps, who i commissioned a 3d model of her weapon from, because i got sick of trying and failing to figure out how it should look from different angles.

part of it came down to the fact that her previous designs never really screamed 'rwby', which was something i wanted to rectify this time, but struggled to find a balance between that and her overall aesthetic. i ended up calling in some help to finalise things.

astra was the very first of the team to get a year 3 concept, and also took me the most tries to get right. i had a few details i really liked and knew i wanted to keep, but the rest didn't come as easily.

her gloves gave me a lot of grief and there are so many different attempts at them that were never saved. i still don't think i really like how they look, but her arms looked too bare without them, and i needed that little heart design on the back.

lily (and cobalt's) original concept's were done even earlier than luna's, and i think i nailed her nearly right away, so she had the least tweaks. i changed her belts from looking like a weird harness, and ended up giving her reasonable holsters in the final.

i really wanted her design to compliment astra's this time around, so i tweaked them both simultaneously to figure out a balance, and i think it shows in a nice, subtle way.

the first concept of luna's year 3 design was done almost a year ago now, and while i didn't hate how it looked, i ended up feeling like it borrowed too heavily from blake and yang's designs, so i kept the aspects i liked most and gave it another shot.

i had a bit of difficulty with luna, lily, and astra for these, because their year 2 designs were so different from their originals, and communicated little about their characters, so they never had a defined 'vibe'. in the end, i think i managed to find a balance that worked.
