There needs to be a change to the law that stops this. Retiring to escape the consequences of your own actions, I mean come on. This is why Hillsborough has been such a grotesque farce

@SaulStaniforth Also for decades 'bent' police officers have used retirement to avoid justice. Successive govts did nothing.

Jury trials represent about 3% of the backlog. Lammy is, basically, lying about the justification for this.
Almost 80,000 court cases are held up in the Crown Court backlog and behind every delay is a victim whose life is on hold. We’re going to change that. Later today I’ll set out a plan to modernise the system and make justice swift and fair.
