I asked and @pau_wee_ delivered. Great little thread here. “it's an active and continuous skill of balancing imagination and constraint”. Couldn’t have said it better myself.
@vixsheikh but before any task, there is the anti-task, which is:. okay, what is the space of possible actions? .what results do i care about? which will i forgo?.which constraints are inflicted by reality, and which constraints do i want to set for myself to create focus?.

Problem selection is a great problem to solve! It’s the discretion needed to know what balls can be dropped or cans can be kicked. And deceptively hard.
I used to think it the goal was solving problems, not just kicking the can down the road. Increasingly, I think kicking the can down the road is basically the optimal approach to most issues.

Interesting piece. Two product related points in there worth calling out:. 1️⃣ “My role was relational, not task-based. Someone had to be the fall guy; someone had to herd the cats". It is maddening for me to see how much focus is applied to the task-oriented parts of the job,.
I keep changing my mind about the AI jobs crisis so jotted down 42 notes on where I’m at:. 1) You don’t need mass unemployment to inspire mass fear—merely its shadow is enough. Just look at SAG-AFTRA and the port strikes last year. 2) Most AI backlash is economic anxiety coated

Inspiration. Perspiration. In that order. It is literally irrational to go the other way, if your ambition is to win.
Great business people are idealistic first and realistic second. This is how they generate vision and then turn it into reality. Most business people are realistic first and idealistic second. This is how they form basic strategies and then believe their disengaged crappy.

Thought-provoking from @anuatluru. Each prompt acts as a micro-dose of validation and simulation.

1️⃣ whether this was built with love and care .2️⃣ what caliber of talent you are able to recruit .3️⃣ how high your standards are. these are all connected. but it is important to note that talent density & quality bar are derivative of 1️⃣. it all starts with care first.
More than words, companies communicate through design and engineering. Things like:. - whether this was built with love and care.- what caliber of talent you are able to recruit.- how high your standards are. …all come through loud and clear when people use the product.

[sausage-making] .When I first drafted this essay, I structured it in the form of "changes + implications" before deciding to go a different way. But for any of you interested, see below for the ideas I was trying to convey. 👇
✍️ New essay published: Playing the headcount accordion. This essay is for those product leaders who are trying to navigate the tension of their organizations wanting to run leaner and faster (the cliche: "do more with less") while so many incentives & constraints are pushing us

This has been my experience thus far. #2 in particular is something worth exploring more. Even though I am technical enough to not be lost in vibe-coding dread, I have leaned into "explain what you're doing / what's going on" as part of this process, and it has helped me build.
@GergelyOrosz I feel like there are two flawed mental models at play:.1. That vibe-coding is a replacement for engineering.2. That vibe-coding precludes you from learning how to engineer. I think #1 is oft-discussed, but I feel #2 is the real opportunity. Thought exercise: what if vibe-coding.

@petergyang i'm not convinced the affection for 4o and distaste for 5 is only about sycophancy and addiction, there are clear attributes of the models textual ux that give 5 a distinct "personality" from 4o. problem is people don't have the right words to be precise about the difference,.
