At the NYC Health Department, we do not “make the proof” to support our work. We let science, data, and the body of evidence guide our research, programs, policies, and decisions to protect and promote the health of New Yorkers.

This #WorldMentalHealthDay, we're reminding New Yorkers about the importance of taking care of your mental health. At @nycHealthy, we know that mental health is just as important as physical health. If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available. Read my statement ⬇️

Just one large sugary drink can exceed the daily recommended amount of added sugars. Through this rule, we aim for New Yorkers to have more insight into the amount of sugar in certain products to make more informed choices.

Every New Yorker deserves access to delicious, healthy food that they feel good about eating. As the first in the nation to add a warning icon for added sugars, this rule underlines our longstanding work to ensure New Yorkers have information about the food they eat.
NEW: Chain restaurants in NYC are now required to post an added sugar warning label for some foods. If you see this icon when you’re eating out, that means an item has 50 grams or more of added sugar. Learn more: https://t.co/p5tkcxxdus

Pregnant people and new parents deserve access to the full continuum of care, from mental health support to help meeting the economic demands of parenthood. We cannot let our systems fail Black women, and this is a first step towards a new future for maternal health in our city.

Brownsville, Brooklyn—which has experienced decades of disinvestment, redlining, and unfair barriers to care—has the highest pregnancy-associated mortality rate in New York City. That’s why we are piloting Neighborhood Stress-Free Zones in Brownsville first.
Today we launched the City’s first-ever pilot of the Neighborhood Stress-Free Zone in Brownsville to improve maternal health. The initiative will expand support for pregnant and postpartum New Yorkers. Learn more: https://t.co/9kFrpQB1HP

I encourage everyone to check in on the people they care about and to take advantage of the resources available like 988. Nobody needs to struggle alone.

Each New Yorker we lose to suicide is one too many. In a society that consistently prioritizes some communities over others, suicide data is increasingly reflecting those patterns as well. Everyone deserves support, especially at their most vulnerable moments.
Suicide-related behaviors, including suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and feelings of sadness and hopelessness, have increased among New York City public high school students, our new report found. Learn more and read the report: https://t.co/0s7H5ERt3T

Thanks to @davechokshi for interviewing me at the @DigitalHealthNY 2025 Annual Summit about the role of tech innovation in health care and public health. One way @nycHealthy is leveraging digital health is with our NYC Health Map and 24/7 disease surveillance system.
