So, I read somewhere that Monday at 8 am is a good time to tweet. Who knows, really? However, I decided that now is the time to do my year-in-review thread showcasing reporting that I am proud of. Get ready...
@pauldebenedetto
To be clear, this was not a spontaneous question, I had to think about the phrasing for a few minutes beforehand so it'd be the right length.

I am begging everyone who's interested in the Virginia Giuffre/Ghislaine Maxwell/ Jeffrey Epstein documents: please, please read reports from legitimate news organizations and journalista. There is going to be a ton of disinfo out there. Please do not consume and believe it!

@DGisSERIOUS
people are going to take this tweet seriously and then say something like "buying from thrift stores is classist" and invoke oat milk as the true environmental evil, or some such.
last summer, Manhattan DA vance said he wouldn't prosecute protesters for being out past 8 pm. i'm reaching out to his office, and all DA candidates, to see how they'd handle last night's arrests at Washington Square Park. let's see who answers!
Palin, who was dining in the cafeteria indoors, said "no" when asked if she was vaccinated. She said she didn't need to be, citing "natural immunity.""
It's been reported that participants in the attempted coup posted their activity on social. It's worth pointing out that social media is used in prosecutions against people who arent accused of trying to overthrow the government,such as indictment against rapper

there is literally no law saying that the press can't write about inadmisible things nor is there a law saying that the possibility of writing about inadmissible things is justification for closure of courtroom or sealing of docs!

Johnathan Majors, who comes to court with a Bible and at least once, a personal poetry book, leaves court for the day. See how he reacts when asked how his poetry is going:
If any people with $ want to start a local news nonprofit, lmk. Local news is NOT dead. There are a lot of people who are commited to reporting on this city who have a financial plan in the works if we have finances. Seriously.
An exchange in the SDNY cafeteria...
Michael Avenatti, as Palin walks by:
"Ms Palin, how are you?" Avenatti told her "good luck" several times.
At end of their encounter, he said good luck again, to which she said
"You too, best of everything."
Ok really going to go upstairs in a min but an important piece of context

Hi! I'm a reporter covering the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard trial for
@vulture
. I was wondering if you have any comment on testimony that Ms. Heard was just "filling space" dating you+that she didn't love you? Please let me know. Urgent deadline. Email in bio. Thanks!
Unrelated...IDK if this is correlation or causation in the wake of T*itter craziness, but it used to be that tweets about high-profile news events would like...be read. Even if you weren't social media famous. Now, it's like posting into a void.

Good morning from 100 Centre Street. The Jonathan Majors trial continues. Grace Jabbari's direct testimony will continue this morning. Court officers are giving Stanford prison experiment vibes today. One removed a reporter's bag from a seat, saying you can't reserve seats, but..
Deliberations in

I recently took a long train ride, and I had wondered whether there was near 100% mask compliance (and overall, a more normal vibe than what I've heard about airplanes these days) because people know they can get kicked off at a random stop should they misbehave.

A man shouted "boo!" from his window as he drove by courthouse. The group of supporters shouted something to the effect of "you're enabling a predator." Who knows whether he was actually booing over the trial or media presence. It's a Monday after days of rain. Weirdness expected

So, I don't want to start any journalism discourse, but I will say that almost everyone in this field would probably learn a lot observing voir dire at least once. Sitting through them, it's soooo clear that Twitter discussion completely misses how a lot of Americans think &
NY state courts are among the least transparent in the US. We need to be able to televise and broadcast high-profile trials. People need to be able to see what's presented and how jurors arrived at a verdict so that even if they disagree, they can accept it and understand why
Defense closing just wrapped. She sat down to table. She and Majors did sort of a sitting hug. She too was dabbing her eyes. This isn't an opinion but a statement of fact: I haven't seen this from a defense lawyer before.
How the R Kelly press corps found out about Cuomo's resignation as per not having phones:
@NinaPullano
walked in, sat down, and held up her notepad with the words "Cuomo resigned."
WRT to pandemic affect on brain...anyone else noticed their speech being kind of off? Losing train of thought, forgetting words? Long term memory a little off? I don't think anything bad is actually happening, from what I have read abt stress' impact generally, this makes sense

WRT the
#GhislaineMaxwell
trial:
it's wayyyyyy too soon for people to start opining on why deliberations are "taking so long."
first, they're not. jurors had one hour on monday, about 7hrs yesterday, and returned at 930 am today. so, we're looking at 1+7+4.5. that's 12.5 hours.
It goes without saying that the weirdness of R. Kelly's trial is compounded by the fact that the judge is not letting a single media member in the courtroom, has delayed release of evidence and today, agreed that evidence made PUBLIC in court couldn't be released to the media
So how could a law enforcement agency with a giant surveillance apparatus not be aware that an influencer with a LOT of followers invited said followers to a NYC landmark at a given time on a given day via social media? Not voicing an opinion but seems like a ? worth asking
What bullshit—EDNY is saying NO press in the R. Kelly courtroom for the trial. Of course I'm going to fight this, and I hope others will join
#PresumptionOfAccess
in my fight!
Omg. A law enforcement agency completed my public records request in a few hours--I'd requested
calls for service at a specific address and they were sent to me! No fight! No yelling on the phone about public records law! Agencies everywhere, please take note!
One R. Kelly supporter has a shirt that reads "Cannick never panic." Deveraux Cannick is Kelly's lead defense attorney. She said a friend another supporter, had them made.
Rebuttal has ended. Now, the judge is instructing the jury.
Jonathan Majors appears to have started crying. He is wiping tears away with a tissue. He started to do so shortly after defense delivered this line: "His fear of what happens when a Black man in America calls 911 came true. And now we’re here."
