Great rules. I abide faithfully by 4&5. 17 & 19 are great, but prepare to derail your TBR & budget, respectively.
Ryan Holiday (@RyanHoliday) is one of the most hardcore readers I've ever come across. He reads 200+ books a year without speed-reading or using audiobooks. Here are 26 reading rules from him:

As much as I love illiterate people enjoying stories, it breaks my heart to see people fall through the literacy cracks & be avid “readers” when they can’t actually decode words & make sense of written language when it’s needed. We’re short changing people who deserve better.

I’ve always sided with “audiobooks are books” (as one who can/does read words on a page too). But I had a convo that woke me to realize that audiobooks can enable and disguise illiteracy. I’m all for using audio as a tool and for enjoyment, but…
Never thought my most controversial post on here would be me saying listening to a book and reading a book are not the same. Let me explain. It’s not a judgment against audiobooks, I listen to them too and I love them. It’s simply a fact that reading something and listening to

What kind of vicious and futile cycle are we getting into if we keep accusing language learning models of using language like we use it, and then trying to change our language so we don’t sound like language models… 🤔

Yes, and often it’s the prose itself. But sometimes it’s the striking idea that Abraham somehow knew or could say that even as he went with full intent to obey God, his son Isaac would live.

Sorry to the nice shopper who so respectfully asked if I was open to selling something I hadn’t even bought yet, but yes, I really do have the perfect spot in my home this shelf. 😁

Sometimes you find a cool shelf at a thrift store & put it in the cart & walk around to decide if you really need it, but then multiple people comment on how cool it is & even ask to buy it off of you if you plan to sell it, so you decide yes, indeed, you really need to keep it.

Day 50 of 75 Booked. ✅ When you're reading a book and you're confused, that confusion is similar to the pain you get in the gym when you're working out. But you're building mental muscles instead of physical muscles. Learn how to learn and read the books. — The Almanack of
Day 49 of 75 Booked. ✅ As long as I have a book in my hand, I don’t feel like I’m wasting time. —Charlie Munger (The Almanack of Naval Ravikant)

Reading through the whole Bible in order for the first time in 2026. I couldn't stop reading the other night & am part way through Exodus now. Most often I read a chapter a night or maybe two, but recently I just can't put it down. I take notes as I read & it's wild how

“This may be the best hole I’ve ever cut.” - @nivenrile Even though unexpected-projects-of-necessity are annoying, aside from writing, music, and hiking, this may well be Sam’s element.
