Imo archetypal determinism is also why most Honda players have made him appear weak in SFV & SF6 (most Honda players play him for shenanigans & neutral skips) and why MK1 Geras players didn't look into EX clone much for a literal year (grappler players are rarely also tech lords)

This thread was inspired by SF6 Kimberly, who was imo mid tier to start, picked most often by players who like to rush & mix which wasn't great, but been able to play solid all along, and once players started doing that she seemed better, except she was buffed in the meantime too

In older MK games, Scorpion is a mid-level crazygonuts char. In MK1, he's a footsies char. So early in MK1, people thought Scorp was weak, because the style he was played in was weak for him. Once players played better, he seemed better! But he'd already been buffed, so, top tier

When a character is identified as a specific archetype, players who like that archetype tend to pick it & play how they like playing. IOW grappler players pick "grapplers" to do command grabs, rushdown players pick "rushdown" to skip footsies, etc. "Archetypal determinism" imo

Every FG has a character picked by players who wanna rush in & mix up, and then like a year later its players go "What if I play slower & THEN mix up" and the character looks stronger, except it's already been buffed because so many players played in ways that made it seem weaker

Final Kombat 2025 was the first pro tour finals for any NRS game that I didn't commentate, and after seeing how it went, maybe that was for the best. Gs to my friends who did commentate it, not only did you do well like always, you were much more gracious than I would have been

btw same exact phenomenon is why most blanka players lose to honda in sf6. it's not a blanka problem, it's a playstyle-preference-of-most-players-who-like-playing-blanka problem. some good blankas make it an even matchup, at least

Thinking back to when Vanilla SF4 Viper players thought she lost to Zangief, not for any real character-based reason but because the kind of player that self-selected into Viper just didn't like the slower, zonier style she needed to beat Zangief. Took em years to wise up
