I’m planning to hire 2 PhD students in Fall25 at @KhouryCollege! How do we make privacy easier for people? How do we address people’s real privacy needs objectively and subjectively? How does AI play a role in introducing and mitigating risks? Talk to me at #UIST2024 #HCOMP2024

USENIX login asked us to write an article about our bicycle hacking work, aimed at a broader audience. Here is the result!

One of the more interesting articles covering our work. It provides a possible explanation for why would you want wireless shifters? Turns out, assembling bikes at high volumes is easier/faster when you don't have wires. Think Trek/Specialized factories.

No one is going to make your drivetrain mis-shift; but bikes' increasing connectivity will likely make them targets sooner or later.
Wireless doping anyone? Time to moonlight as a pro bike racer! Adding bicycles to my list of "strange stuff that you didn't know could be hacked." Excellent collab ft. @tuxmaniac and Maryam!

Researchers have discovered a way that would allow anyone with a few hundred dollars to hack into a wireless gear-shifting systems used by the top cycling teams for events like the Tour de France.

A year ago, I couldn’t have imagined that our group’s research on wireless security would make its way into the world of professional bicycle racing — including events like the Tour de France and Vuelta a España. Fantastic collaboration with @EarlenceF.

If you're worried about what kind of data your car is gathering about you (as @kashhill reported about GM) and have a late model car, please consider signing up for my colleagues' study about this. Eligibility screening and online consent form: https://t.co/LjIBQSQ1N6

This. In the Boston area , red lights are a suggestion (to both pedestrians and vehicles). Clear indication of how lawlessness is peaking in every big US city.
Interesting data point about how lawlessness spreads: a friend of mine who lives in SF says he now just makes U-turns whenever he wants, no matter what the signs say. If they never ticket anyone, why should he worry about the signs?
