Very excited for our new paper! Our work demonstrates the utility of CRISPR for advancing our understanding of carbohydrate utilization in trees and how these processes may be influenced in an increasingly changing climate 🌳🌳🌳 @UGAWarnell @TsaiLabUGA.

Out now! Part of @triple_tuma’s (double) dissertation on seasonal coppicing responses of SUT4-KO poplars. Fluctuating/frustrating greenhouse experiments turned into novel finds—shifting carbohydrate allocations for growth vs winter protection. #CRISPR.

Usually we assume that mentorship is beneficial, but our results show that some mentoring relationships can lead to negative consequences that harm students' undergraduate and career trajectories.

Undergrads who experienced greater negative mentoring reported lower scientific self-efficacy, science identity, research task values, and had lower intentions to pursue a scientific career!.

We found undergrads experience both an absence of supportive mentoring and destructive mentoring experiences. In general, negative mentoring experiences are less common, but they can have a big impact.

Very excited to be apart of this paper with @erindolan1 @LimeriLisa and to see this multi year project in print! If you are interested in undergrad mentorship quality, you should use this measure!! Our robust survey is freely available in @CBELifescied.

Thrilled to share our new measure: the Mentoring in Undergraduate Research Survey (MURS)! Led by @LimeriLisa & grounded in work from @triple_tuma when he was an #NSFREU student. Thanks to the NSF IUSE program for supporting this work! #NSFfunded.

Our results provide some of the most robust evidence to date on how to match graduate students and faculty mentors to promote effective mentoring relationships. We discuss these implications and a number of directions for future research in the paper! 7/7.

We found that mentees who shared attitudes, values, & beliefs with their mentor & whose mentors displayed greater cultural awareness experienced quality mentorship. Pairing students & faculty who share personal qualities may be more critical than matching based on demographics 6/.

Contrary to popular belief, gender, racial, & ethnic similarity between mentees and mentors were also not associated with greater mentorship quality. These trends were also largely consistent across all tested demographic groups. 5/.

Our results showed that neither mentor career stage nor mentee capital predicted higher quality mentorship. Rotations vs. direct admissions also had no influence on mentorship. 4/.
