But Superman has heart, panache, and Gunn’s quirky humor. His Kaiju-eye-poking gag (Starro/Suicide Squad) returns, with a hilarious meta reaction shot. It’s fun, colorful, and very much the Superman I grew up with. its everything I loved reading at some point, but it definitely.

What didn’t work in Gunn’s film: Superman hardly wins battles himself. Except Ultraman, most “last blows” come from Justice Gang or Krypto. And while Gunn nails ensemble humor all the time, Superman lacks the characterisation & shock-value of GotG or Suicide Squad.

We saw shades of that later in Jeph Loeb’s stories, and in Quitely/Morrison’s All-Star Superman. (Hate me, but I never loved that book own multiple editions for Quitely’s art, but story-wise it never worked for me.).

The Superman stories we read were never origins, nor the grim post-Doomsday arcs. They were whimsical episodes, bold 1930s sci-fi homages. Superman once had a screen to watch the future. Villains were crazy, childishly pragmatic, but unforgettable.

The film has the best Lois-Clark moments since 1978. It’s a departure from the Nolan/Snyder universe and I’m okay with that. I loved those films, but I also find Gunn’s popping comic-book colors & irreverence endearing.

Okay, I finally watched and enjoyed Gunn’s Superman. It has all the craziness of the Superman stories I grew up with. These comics reached India at least a decade late, so I’m sure Gunn also grew up on the same kind of tales.
