When white southerners of a certain age discover I teach history, they’re quick to tell me how their family didn’t believe in segregation. Based on these interactions over 20 yrs, I can now conclude that segregation in the South was enforced by three guys and a basset hound.

I worked in Vera's office then and remember an "oof" feeling seeing # of write ins and undervotes. But, w/ no other name on ballot, people had lots of freedom to cast protest vote/not vote. And also, antisemitism is real.
And 2000 would have been a similar scenario -- Vera won outright in May but maybe still appeared on the ballot in November?

This thread, and the one it responds to, is provocative for me. Illustrates the tensions inherent in finding the right role as an ally.The part I think I can use to anchor my thinking, though, is "...and yield to young organizers." Thanks for crystalizing that for me.
The WOM (and remind me what the new dads' group is called) are gaining the attention we knew they would because society values their status in ways that Black, Indigenous, Latinx, or PanAsian parents aren’t. Keep using that stage for good and yielding to young organizers.
