I go birding and usually forget to tweet about it. Sometimes in Hampshire, sometimes the Thames Estuary and occasionally further afield

Last Wednesday I finally saw my first ever Broad-billed Sandpiper, in fact there were ten of them in front of the viewpoint at Atanasovsko Lake, Burgas, amongst a great selection of other waders! π§π¬

A little bit of paradise in Lower Higham, Kent. Hundreds of Med Gulls catching insects over the fields, a Hobby joining in, Cuckoos calling, Little Owl in the orchard and Corn Buntings jingling

After taking so many pics of well camouflaged Jack Snipe over the last couple of winters it was a nice change to photo this one amongst some greenery @HalfSnipe

Itβs horrible, but true. The ethereal, enigmatic Slender-billed Curlew has been eradicated. We are to blame. My blog below. β¦@CurlewActionβ© β¦@CurlewLIFEβ©

A new paper calculates that the likelihood of the Slender-billed Curlew being extinct is 99.6%. Mary Colwell reflects on this heart-breaking conclusion.

Last weekend in Norfolk, a day late for the big fall of Friday 6th but still a great number and variety of common migrants to enjoy, including lots of Redstarts and Pied and Spotted Flys. Masses of Wheatears through the dunes and bushes full of very yellow Willow Warblers

Not that often that you see adult and juvenile Curlew Sandpipers together. The juvs seem to be a few weeks early this year

Last week in Rila NP, Bulgaria, going to the highest point in the Balkans, Musala (2925m). Saw a lot of Alpine Accentors near the peak, but no luck with Alpine Chough. Several sightings of Balkan Chamois π§π¬

I would really recommend Canna as a place to visit for birders. It's not that hard to get to, there's a variety of accommodation and there is loads of wildlife, which I probably only scratched the surface of during a couple of days there

On the way home I got off the train for a few hours in the West Highlands, which added a few different birds including a pair of Black-throated Divers

As with most Scottish island trips, the boat across produced plenty of birds, including hundreds of Manx Shearwaters (Rum has the largest colony in the world)

I heard Corncrake in eight locations and eventually saw the head of one around dusk, which disappeared before I got a photo...

A pair of Long-eared Owls had raised two chicks. I had a few views of the adults when it was too dark for photos, then eventually I located one of the youngsters just before I left
