When we have ID cards and a civil servant leaks all of our data, will our free flight be to or from the UK?.

I like chess. I think schools should have chess clubs and that kids should spend lomg, wet weekends in their grandparents' caravan learning to play. But this isn't serious government. Silly when Sunak did it, silly now civil servants have reheated the same policy for Reeves.

Having played chess at a young age, I know the transformational impact it can have on young people. That's why today we're allocating £1.5m to help identify, support, and elevate top-tier players who have the potential to compete at a global level.

Britain is over-governed at every level. That there are still a few, small bastions of liberty left might be baffling in its rarity, but not its principle.

Entirely agree. Refusal to introduce ID cards baffling. Britain in a deep sense is ungoverned.

The latest argument is that justice delayed is justice denied but justice denied is also justice denied. And justice requires due process for the accused. 5/5.

Accused of fraud or rape? In recent years, the state has wanted to meet that increased gravity with reduced protection and process. 4/5.

Far more egregiously, since it lacked any pretence to be anything else, in Scotland the executive wanted to remove juries from rape trials for the sole purpose of increasing convictions. Ordinary people, being too unpersuadable, just needed to be removed. (The plan failed.) 3/5.

The Criminal Justice Act 2003, in a since-repealed section, tried to ease juries out of the way if fraud cases might be complex or long-winded, the commoner being too stupid and impatient to have it explained to them. 2/5.

Trial by jury is a profoundly important right and a safeguard against overmighty state power. The latest attack on it is done in the name of administrative efficiency, but the truth is that governments and 'experts' have long despised them. 1/5.

This vignette goes to the heart of the problem in our politics. Too many in Westminster just don't think those we send there should prevail over the state.

'Raw vibes' and emotional MPs are the opposite of Parliament being "at its best". Their job is principled scrutiny. #AssistedDyingBill #assistedsuicide #AssistedDying.
