Told my therapist (a black woman) that I’ve been struggling to feel hope in the face of what seems like insurmountable hatred, corruption, and ignorance, and she said: . “Welcome. This feeling you’re having right now is how black people have always felt in America. Welcome.

I wrote this out because writing helps me organize my thoughts, and maybe it’ll help anyone else who feels like we’re living through the beginning of the end of the world. You’re not alone. 8/8.

But now this cynical voice has completely taken over my head. Am I allowed to enjoy a movie about good people trying to do good things and feel hope? Even when the present, and even the future, feel so bleak? I don’t know the answer. 7/x.

This shadow of resentment and fatalism first took hold in 2016, and over the past 18 months has devoured my brain. and I didn’t even notice. I thought I was becoming a mature adult, less naive and more skeptical. I thought I was just too smart for cheap marketing ploys. 6/x.

I’ve somehow developed a gut reaction of dismissal to any new tv show or movie that seems to be trying too hard to manipulate (read: access and connect to) my feelings. I am immediately suspicious that any positive news story must be paid propaganda, and is probably fake. 5/x.

I think the last five years have left me so jaded and bitter that I fear I have lost the ability to engage with people (and with media) in good faith or with any kind of emotional vulnerability. 4/x.

So I used my skills from therapy, took a deep breath & asked myself why I was having this powerfully negative reaction to an innocent and considerate gesture. And… 3/x.

“Ugh movies about this subject never get it right and are always cheesy, and I bet the name drop just got the school a lot of money, and they probably didn’t even cast disabled actors for those disabled characters, and…” Basically my brain started spinning out w/ negativity 2/x.

So today, a friend texted me to recommend a new movie, which features both my alma mater and my field of speciality. She texted me this because the movie made her think of me, and she thought I would enjoy it. A purely kind and thoughtful message. But my face went “😐🙄😒” 1/x.

Teachers, trained educators, who work in the classroom every day, who are helping to raise the next generation, should be the ones who decide on curriculum. Why are we letting politicians determine what our children learn?.

Remember catching up with the daily news? Well, it’s 2021 now, baby. Put your phone down for 45 minutes? A wildfire is raging, a hurricane destroyed a coastal city, there’s a new COVID strain, a video of today’s “police-involved shooting” is going viral, nazis are marching,
