After PhD, I wanted to study solitude cumulatively. It's a brick-by-brick process, so I am excited to share this new paper, now published at JoP.
Preprint:
TL;DR solitude appears to be an attractive option when we experience strong negative emotions
🧵
Spent today breaking the news with my family and close friends, read on tax, took some time explaining to my parents what it means now that I am associating rather assisting.
I have just been promoted to Associate Professor 😊 Time to be happy and treat myself.
Roses are red
Violets are blue...
Reviewer 2: Please add operational definitions of roses and violets to the Introduction and clarify in Methods how you measure the color red and blue.

I remember that time I walked into an elevator with a mom and her infant. The baby kept staring at me so I said: “your baby is processing a new stimulus it’s a sign of memory”. Then we stood for the rest of that elevator ride while I looked around hoping to find my social skills.
Happy to say that I'll be joining
@DurhamPsych
this Fall as Assistant Prof in Quant SocPsych 🥳
In the past 3 wks, it has been

Just flew from Rochester to Boston yesterday, and as we landed, I was so glad not having to go through customs
Here are open access method/stats resources I have collected to share with students when they ask. I find them easy to follow. Please share more so we all can have free stuff.
P.S. Some people on this site might have made these resources but I don't know to tag them.
I curated this list so I know what Open Access journals are available out there where I can also satisfy my institution's promotion criteria.
If you know any other open-access journals, pls add to the spreadsheet (as comment) I will add that in.
Pls RT!

Next day...
Mom: We are going to order in for dinner. What do you want to eat?
Small child: I want soup!
Mother: I don't know any places around here that serves just soup
Small child: "Alexa, where's a brothel near me?"
Grant office just formally accepted my ESRC NI grant offer 🥳, starting June 1. This'll fund me for next 3 yrs to explore solitude as opportunity for rest in everyday life.
I'll soon recruit a 2-yr PDRA & update my website w more info, so watch this space if you are interested!
1)I want to share my story of navigating around promoting OS in a dept that is not OS-friendly. I have debated quite a bit about whether to share this story (bc there are risks for those who are mentioned) but I hope it'll be useful for grad students who are in the same situation
A bit late to share this news. Exactly 2 weeks ago I got a letter that I completed my probational period.
I am now permanent staff at
@DurhamPsych
☺️ 🎉🪅
@ericneumannpsyc
So I was standing in the observation room staring at the participant for a good 5 minutes like a creep.
They worked on the puzzles very diligently. I never use the 2-way mirror again after that.
A good news to share 🎉 I have a book coming out on Solitude next year with Cambridge Press. More updates later 🥳
A colleague kindly took my headshots for the book. This shot is not used but I like it because it looks like I could be in a Spike Lee movie.
Past few weeks on FB I confronted some Vietnamese family members in US a/b their anti-Blackness comments
Since I'm younger, I got criticised so mom stepped in to defend me. Now the family is turning on her. Could I ask to you like this so I can show her that she has ur support?
My new paper is published showing that autonomous motivation for spending time alone (aka embracing your solitude) has well-being implications for those who feel like they don’t belong. This research specifically look at 1st yr’s transition to college.
I recently shared w a fellow ECR how a lot of practices in academia-which is mainly driven by Western cultures-do not usually align with values with which I was raised, things like self-promotion, praising your work’s importance in manuscripts, assertively opposing s/o’s opinion.
Thoughts on COVID-19 research RE: psychological impact of lockdown.
My interpretation of data I've seen: unless we focus on vulnerable groups (e.g., those w mental health conditions), it looks like people seem to be hanging on OK(???)
Below is list of data that I've looked at:
Within past 1 year, I've taught myself MLM & data visualisation in R, qualitative research w thematic analyses, EMA design & analyses
All was made possible thanks to YT videos & blog tutorials from people who make the time to create and make those materials freely accessible 🙏🏾
I used to be soft-spoken but yesterday I said this loud and clear in my lecture on ethics:
🗣️ "If u say ur data is anonymous, keep in mind that, depending on ur sample pool, certain combi of indirect data can make it easy to identify, for ex, 5ft Asian woman in Durham Psych dep."
@ericneumannpsyc
My first year in PhD, my advisor let me use his lab room with 2-way mirror. I was test running a procedure where participant was left in the room to work on some puzzles; I did not know that you need to turn the light off in the observation room for participant to not see me. 1/
Excited for my first day as Assistant Professor at
@DurhamPsych
:) Just settled in my new office and the first accomplishment is getting the zen rocks stacked.
If my peace is disturbed, it will make a loud noise...
Woke up to a scary text from mom: "Assistant Professor...Does that mean your job is to assist a professor?"
Apparently there are debates about how to translate those terms to Vietnamese. One comical post suggests a Full Professor is a Professor who has just eaten lots of food.
So grateful and honored to receive this award 🥳 and it was fun to record a 3-minute video summarising this research and its significance to me. Thank you
@SocialPsychBull
.
Also many thanks to the
@DurhamPsych
technology team who helped me record and edit this video.
We are delighted to announce that the 2021 SPB Solomon Asch Award for the best paper goes to... 🥁 Thuy-vy Nguyen from the Department of Psychology at Durham University (UK) 1/3
This post is 2 years old but it still remains an influential read that has changed my practices in evaluating paper results and interpreting my own results
A good primer for anyone looking to engage in higher quality research practices to find truth
@dingding_peng
I discuss w a collab, that now I am recruiting new moms for my research, we realized how much convos around mothers’ health is child-centric; there is less priority to improve moms’ health for mothers. I don’t have child so maybe I am biased, but to me that’s is not quite right.
@tabiwilbur
2 advices I found incredibly helpful: 1) directly answer the question; if it is a yes/no then start with a yes or a no then follow with reasoning, 2) it is OK to take a few seconds to think about the question; that means make sure u listen to the question...leading me to my 3rd
Today I open up to mom:“My job isn’t 9 to 5. I don’t have a boss. I get to solve problems and I really like what I do. So I am never *too* busy. It’s just that I get overwhelmed sometimes feeling I haven’t learned enough what I need to learn...and that’s why I haven’t called.”
This is a brag. Got an email from an Editor this AM:
"I just wanted to send you a separate email to tell you I thought your review was spot-on. I very much appreciate your valuable help."
Not sure why out of many things I have done in academia, this feels overwhelmingly good.
@LisaJaremka
I thought it was very interesting that my mom prepared me for this around the final year of my PhD when I visited home: "people don't talk much with you not because they don't like you, but you are a professor now, they don't know what to say to you". It's a good reframing for me
Seeing my phd advisor Ed is the highlight of my trip. He is very much responsible for me going from a quiet and reserved small person to a still kinda quiet and reserved small person who pretty much gets a hang of things now. This conference has been wonderful
#sdt2023
@LisaJaremka
The physical separation is one thing, but psychological separation is another. For some, becoming a professor or getting a PhD might involve entering a world completely strange to the people they knew before becoming a professor.
Within my 1st 2 years of my post, I've supervised, collaborated, & published w ECRs from China, Turkey, & India. I've made 2 x $5K donation to an org that supports team collaboration to collect samples outside of typical psych samples from US/UK/Europe.

...strategy, which i develop to help myself not go off at a tangent: answer in bullet points; for example: “i have 2 points to address that: first....second”. So generally, practice to keep your answers organized and to the point.
It was that time my dad took me to the University of Economics in HCMC, Vietnam, to do a presentation on
@PsySciAcc
. Growing up, dad took me to all my classes and still continue to support all my academic adventures on his moped. Happy father’s day 😊
Sometimes I wish R markdown had a function like Word doc that allows you to make comments or tracked changes on people's R codes. Does that exist?

My parents are in UK to visit me and see my new workplace! Just like other times they’ve visited to see places where I did my BA, MA, & PhD 😚
First stop: English breakfast at Tesco.
My parents don’t know much a/b academia or higher education but...
I am curious; Academics, do you ever feel like your institution holds back your research?
Feeling held back means new ideas/innovation discouraged, severe delays in research progress, missed opportunities, etc
See separate polls for US/CAN, EU, UK, or elsewhere below.

In celebration of finishing my grant app today (took me 7 months!), I took a solitary walk to city centre, got a boba tea and took photos of Durham Cathedral....again. The cathedral and I have gotten very close this past year ☺️
A useful paper to coach students to form clear research question and testable hypotheses. The paper has examples:
This is not easy but it is rarely taught in Methods course.
I see unclear hypotheses in papers I review as well, esp moderation hypotheses.
This weekend I finally finished building this tiny home. I started this a while ago and just did bits by bits on weekends.
I made a few deviations from the catalog: it is a single-person home...but has space to host guests for afternoon tea, including a high chair for baby Yoda.
My partner and I practiced our conversational British English today as we passed each other at the coffee machine:
Me: “You ok?”
Partner: “I’m alright”
Me: “Brilliant”
Another straightforward paper on creating a logical flow and improving clarity of scientific writing. This author is 👌🏻
Wish this'd be taught more in undergrad, MA, PhD courses. Relevant to all; even fluent English academics write hard-to-follow sentences
Whenever I think about rejections in academia, from grant applications to publication to job search, I remind myself of this bird so I don't feel too bad.
Lately I tracked my recovery* time:
3-hr of intense faculty meeting where I need to speak: 1 full day recovery
Midday 2-hr presentation: rest of day
Full-day low-pressure professional event: 1 sleep
I find it help to understand my recovery time to give myself time to take it easy
Took twitter break to prepare for my driving test today. Passed 1st try 🥳. This is one of the key milestones for our transition to new life in UK. Now I can tell people that I speak roundabouts in both Vietnamese (native) and British (intermediate) 🎊🎈🚙
When my parents visited UK 1st time in 2019 I was preoccupied with my new job to take time off. This has been on my mind a lot in pandemic. So this time I prioritized all my 2 weeks for them. Yesterday we cooked a Vietnamese meal with tomatoes from my garden before they left 🥰
For those who have supervised PhD students, is there such a thing as having too many PhD students that one feels overwhelmed/unable to give them enough time/attention? Do you have advise on how many PhD students at a time supervisor should have for optimal supervision experience?
@westwoodsam1
During PhD, a fellow grad student got bullied because of their headstrong desire to use open science practices in their research. That got me mad so I went full rebel mode, just more organised. I ended up marrying that grad student too so now I am trapped in it.
@GordPennycook
I left US *academia* bc of many problems, illiberalism isn’t one:
-nepotism
-lack transparency/fairness
-prominence worshiping
-favor of opinions/debates > scientific credibility
With those being systematic problems, there is no perfect US job.
Recently I told my parents my partner and I are cutting down on carbs. They didn't say anything.
A few days later mom said to me *in quite serious tone*: "Thuyvy, dad and I talked. J is American so he'll be fine, but you are Vietnamese. You need rice." 😅
@RyoMasahiro
Delegate tasks and say no.
Delegate: More often many PIs do all. All it takes is a question from a student/RA, and the PI ‘d write the long email to explain or, worse, do it for them.
Say no: not everything has to be done now, or even at all. Prioritize what now and what waits.
I have recently had a few confusing experiences with "dinner" in England.
An example:
Me: I would like to reserve a table for Sunday lunch please?
Restaurant: Hello, we do not serve lunch on Sunday, just dinner. We do have open slot at 12PM. Does that work?
Me: 👀
I just got a surprise present from the Vietnam embassy in London. 1kg of rice 🍚
This was sent to Vietnamese academics who are working in the UK, including a heart-warming letter about the challenges of this time and the hope that this present will help connect us to home 😭
Today I’d to express my appreciation to my advisor Ed Deci who continues to provide support for my visa, and make sure that I able to legally stay in US to pursue my research path. I am speaking from the perspective of s/o w a passport power ranking of 56, 1/n
@jamesheathers
is at our department today to talk about techniques you can use to detect errors in research reports. More broadly, this reminds us to think more critically when reading a paper, the assumptions that can be made, and whether certain stats are probable.

Hi 👋 I was commissioned to write a piece for
@ConversationUK

@DurhamPsych
@durham_uni
I am in Edinburgh. Hoped to do walk-in for Schengen visa but unsuccessful 😢. Luckily my trip purpose is also to come to this Viet restaurant. Spot-on ambiance eg. instrumental music. The moment I started speaking Viet, within 5 min owner already knew my job & family situation 😆
I have UK students email me with just “hey there”. A few assume I am a grad student; I saw their face surprised to find out I am the PI of the project. I spend time looking up people to address them appropriately so I expect the same. Please share this with your students please.
Sharing this for those who might benefit. I get a certain amount of student emails that are unprofessional/inappropriate. This webpage has some templates to help students structure emails to professors (e.g., using their title and not their first name).
I served as internal review for a viva (PhD defense) today; it was my 1st and it was intense, in the sense that, there was no presentation like in US, but reviewers asked questions & candidate defended their thesis…for 3 hrs, no supervisor present.
Is this a typical viva in UK?
If you asked me 1 year ago, I'd never imagine I could finish a study and submission in 5 days. I do mean from Jan 8 = downloading data to Jan 13 = submitting the manuscript.
Yay me! \( ゚ヮ゚)/
What made that happen?
We two faculty
@DurhamPsych
got our 1st jab this week! Got the jab and then back to marking. Just a bit of sore arm, nothing more serious. People at

Premise: Many scientists don’t have time to clean data to make it intelligible to others so shy away from sharing them. Question/idea: Should departments hire a person to help academic staff manage data for sharing in ways that align w their region’s or funder’s data mgmt regs?
Congrats to Dr.

I want to put this out there:
I script all my lectures & talks (using ppt notes & presenter view) & have no shame in admitting that. The notes help me structure what I say to audience, & reduce the chance of me saying things on the fly w/o allowing myself time to think a/b them.
Hey twitter today I was gonna to share a good career news, but early this AM I heard my parents' visas to come live with me got refused, and THEN I got news that my sis is going to have her baby NOW! So my day is a rollercoaster, and I am a ball of anxiety. Pls send good vibes.
I recently gave a 2-hour "crash course" about
#OpenScience
to postgrad students
@DurhamPsych
I received optimistic comments from students about the materials they were assigned to (see below 👇)
On the discussion board and in-class discussion, the students express that 1/
We have settled in the UK and our dogs and cat also arrived safely.
I also found out Tesco sells my guilty pleasure Shin Ramyun so everything will be just fine here on out.
Thanks all my collaborators for being so patient. Looking forward to getting back to work very soon.✌️
Time for some good news 🥳. Pls allow me a long thread to reflect on my research journey and how these news open up a future of what lies ahead for me.
Just a few days before Christmas, my dissertation in 2018 got accepted at

1st time I did APA's 3-min thesis competition was exciting. We were allowed 1 slide, so I put all my animations in 1 slide. Things flew in and out, dissolved and appeared. It was magical. I got 2nd place. The year after I heard they changed the rule to 1 slide w no animations 😛
Stopped by Paolo’s poster because his work resonates with me; I spend more than half of my life proving my economic worth in every single visa process. Thanks for working on this
@PaoloAPalma
Happy news today! My parents got both jabs.
Past months, news from home 've been playing at the back of my mind. My family is OK; I am just very homesick. Sometimes if I feel a need to cry at my desk, I don't stop it; have a moment, then wipe tears off and back to work.
102 days & counting. Since 31/5, different measures of movement restrictions & activity suspension have been imposed in Vietnam's largest city Saigon. Today, takeouts resumed but most residents must still stay home. Photos by Cuong Tran, Duc Tran, Andy Ip
A useful reading teases apart variances explained by random & fixed effects at different levels in multilevel models (MLMs)
The paper also mentions
#Rstats
package r2mlm to get % of variance explained by different components in MLMs
Even the idea of self-care and asking for support to me is also very individualistic. I was more used to practices of sensing that someone need support so you volunteer it to them. Growing up, I was taught to pick up cues to offer help/food to others before they even have to ask.
This is just an observation, not to criticize.
For ex, today I wrote my 1st blog on my webpage and shared it w my mum, 1st thing she asked: “is that OK? I fear people don’t like to know what you think.” To her it is simply unusual to assume people like to know what you think 🤔
Starting June 2022, I had the opportunity to build my own team after securing the
#ESRC
New Investigator grant.
It has been a learning process so I wrote a blog post to document the lessons I learn when taking on this PI role and building my team. Summary of key points:
1st yr in PhD, I called mom crying when the ethics lady gave me a hard time. Bc mom is mom so she said: “sometimes people give you a hard time bc they take you seriously”.
Thx to mom I now take negative reviews like a champ, one donut at a time. I have grown...like a butterfly.
We wrote a letter to NAS to bring up the challenge we faced with listing all authors on a recent big team pub at PNAS. We are aware the issue is bigger than this example but hope this letter is a good start.
Pls help us sign if you agree. Pls also RT!
What I love about where I live are random colourful houses i.e purple, pink, green. Do people consult their neighbours when they decide to turn their semi-attached to purple while the rest of the block is beige?
Here is a photo of me and my twin. You almost cannot tell us apart.
I got good news that I received Schengen visa for 6 months to cover both the trip this weekend to Norway for a workshop organized by
@lucas_jeno
and ICPS in Belgium, March 2023. Between now and May I will be able to travel to Schengen countries if needs and opportunities arise 🎉
PSA: academics who mention PNAS in their recorded or online presentations should be aware that if you pronounce it [peenas] the automatic transcription will almost always get it terribly wrong 😅 Best to spell it out.
@KouMurayama
I was criticized by a reviewer that my writing is informal (i.e. simple straightforward sentences) and I thought “so? As long as I communicate my idea why does that matter?”
Yesterday I did my first public radio appearance and had the great time. The discussion has now been posted on the website👇

I grew up during when Vietnam was rebuilding its economy so my parents worked all the time, esp bc they were in manufacturing and that was the big drive of the economy at the time.

Thought I'd end up w JPSP
But it wasn't a match
Cut it shorter for PsychSci
Now I read it and laugh
Even almost got reviewed
And for JESP, I’m so thankful
Wish I could say, "Thank you" to SPPS
'Cause editor was an angel
Thk u next. Thank u next next...🤪
It is almost bedtime & I have only one wish. That
@PsyArXiv
'd make it easer to add >500 authors bc I finally found time to sit down to make sure all authors on the manuscript are added to the online preprint; my wrists hurt but I am only on page 7 out of 28 pages of author list.
I got a grant to study solitude time for new mums. It just so happened that my 2 sisters became new mums last year and this year. It’s common in Vietnam for mums to move in with grandparents during the 1st year so our household has been very busy.
A photo of our afternoon.
I'd like to celebrate an accomplishment today 🎉:
I just survived my very first 4-hour PhD viva as examiner!

I am fully aware this is not a good time to tweet this, but I have delayed doing this waiting for a better day in academia…but it seems like one thing just follows another and no better day seems in sight.
My attitude now is 'don't wait, just eat cake' so I am here to pitch...1/
Data shows that, people generally want to help others (helping gains 🙂)
But when workplace shows consistent evidence of unfair treatments, the most cost-effective way is to withdraw citizenship & look out for urself🤷🏻♀️
So when you maintain an unfair system, there are costs
